I'm flying from Denver, but I've been told that they are cheaper if you fly from elsewhere. I'm wide open for my cheapest option.

I'm not planning on going any time soon, I'm just wanting to get an idea how much we would have to save up.

That all depends on what city in Japan you are flying to. Here are some sample prices from:

Denver-Narita (Tokyo) - $644
Denver-Osaka - $782
Denver-Sapporo - $905
Denver-Hiroshima - $1119

Since Denver is an international airport and services those cities, you probably can't get tickets too much cheaper. If you did, then you would have to buy tickets to that departure city anyways, so it would probably be more of a hassel then a savings. Also, remember that the farther out that you can purchase your tickets as well as the length of your stay will affect ticket price as well.

From Dallas/Ft. Worth-Narita - $785
From LAX-Narita -$637 but a ticket from Denver to LA costs $234.

Wow some of you guys have been ripped off.
Around this time of year you can get tickets around $600.
I know because my friend is planning on leaving in 2 weeks for Japan and she got $600 total for a round trip outta LA on United Airlines.
Oh but if you include hotels and stuff I can see it going over a grand.

I flew to Kinsai airport from LA and it cost me a thousand. Let me tell you don't worry about the price so much ..worry about which airline to take as thats just as important. look its a vacation and if your so worried about cost save up so more and then go. I flew Japan airlines (JAL) service was GREAT. I will not fly any other airline except JAL now. NO i don't work for them or anything but I had no problems on the airline. Food I think on most airlines is the same as the 2 same companies make food for most airlines. What I liked about JAL is lights out for a LONG time, and the stewardesses are excellent

Your best bet is to fly from either San Francisco or Los Angeles. For your reference these two gateways have the most International flights to Asia and to Japan. On average if you purchase your ticket through an ethnic ticket consolidator you'll be able to a buy a round trip economy ticket for less than $500. Please note Asian carrier's websites or the well known online travel sites, e.g. Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, Priceline don't have the lowest fares to Asia.
