Should be long enough to cover the rectum. If you want it done, it needs to be done by an experienced vet right after the puppies are born. If you already own a puppy or a dog that is undocked, then don't do it, it is too late.

Generally, tail docking is done at either the 2nd or 3rd vertebrae. Typically, a Dobermann Pinscher undergoes docking within days of its birth.

Although there are many who view docking as inhumane, one practical reason for docking the tail of a Doberman is that it removes what would be a convenient "handle" for a criminal or attacker to grab when the Doberman is performing its guard or police work.

Another reason is that dogs with the thin, whip-like tail of the Doberman have a very common occurrence of "broken tail" or "happy tail" syndrome. This can range in injury from the actual tail bones being broken to common skin injuries that are very slow to heal because of the difficulty associated with bandaging or protecting the tail from further injury and infection. This is often a self-inflicted injury caused by the Doberman enthusiastically wagging its long tail and having it hit some hard object repeatedly.

Hope this information helps!

The traditional way is with a knife. Quick, clean, and over with in a matter of seconds while the puppies are tiny. The best and most humane way to dock. There's a new, more PC method of banding the tail, which is putting a very tight band on the tail, cutting off circulation and causing it to die and fall off. It takes longer and probably hurts a lot more. This has become a popular way of castrating/docking sheep and cattle as well... IMO, quick and bloody is the way to do it.

I have a beautiful Dobe with a docked tail. If it's ok to circumcise baby boys, it's okay to dock a Dobe's tail. Anyone who circumcises and thinks it's okay is an idiot. It is painful and completely unnecessary. THAT should be outlawed. BTW, tail docks are done with anesthesia and undocked Dobe tails are dangerous. Smacking it and breaking it is painful.

Dobermans tails are docked at the thrid joint unless you are looking for a very short dock then at the second joint.
It depends on the vet who does it where they are done.

Don't dock it! Why would you want to cut off a dog's tail just for looks? That's awful.

First, I do not recommend docking or cropping at all. This is cosmetic surgery, and is not neccesary. However, to answer your question the tail is docked at approximately the second joint.
