It seems I may have gotten some kind of virus or something... when I turn on my computer it functions normally until i double-click (or right-click and select "open") and of the icons on my desktop; the windows will not open (the hourglass appears, but then goes away and the window is not open).

I cannot run a spyware check or open Task Manager either. I would do a system restore, but I cannot open the Control Panel. If I click on the Start menu, that will come up, and it WILL allow me to shut down/restart, but nothing else will open.

Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. (Keeping in mind that I am not well-versed in software.)

Turn your PC off, then turn it back and hold down the F8 key. When it comes up, select Start in Safe Mode. Once it finishes booting up, you can run your anti-virus, anti-spyware programs.

Have you tried opening windows using your keyboard only? You can open the Control Panel by pressing the Windows button on your keyboard (the one that looks like the Windows icon).

Windows button/Settings/Control Panel

Once there, you can navigate using the arrow keys. Hit Enter to execute a file.

I hope this helps.

Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key over and over again as the system boots up. See what you can do from there. Good luck.

I've encountered such same problems with yours but i re-format my hard drive and re-install all the systems. It fix all the problems.
