I really don't mean to be offensive - mildly hackle-raising, but not outright offensive - but when I see throngs of people with their arms raised, swaying synchronously like seaweed, gazing into the void, I find it frightening. It looks cultish and like group-mentality id working overtime to eclipse any shred of independant thought. It look scultish. What IS that about???

valmikey, I see your point, but the people at a rock concert do not have that vacuous look to them... well, some do, but that's because they have been using illicit substances, and I find that equally frightening.

Nothing offensive about asking. Better to ask than assume.
The technical term for it is an ecstasy. It's when we are basically outside of ourselves and deeply in touch with God. MOST folks are faking it. Just following along with the masses. During a genuine ecstasy you can stick someone with a pin and they don't feel it.
Catholic visionaries are put through such tests before they are accepted as genuine. The visionaries of Medjugorje failed such tests and have been declared false.
You can look up Neuro-theology to learn more. Below is a copy of the Newsweek article that launched our fascination with neurotheology.
"Slain in the Spirit" is when one passes out. Again, masses of folks will fake it. I was at a Protestant healing service once and the pastor tried a number of times to push me over and thus imitate all the folks laying on the floor pretending to be in the grip of God.

The hands are raised in worship and it symbolizes that you are worshiping without doubt or anger. There is no better feeling than to be in the presence of the Lord. The first time I saw it I felt the same way you did, in fact, I could hardly keep from laughing but I took time to find out what it was all about and there are people that really worship with all of their hearts, mind and body. God would never want you to disengage your brain....he wants us to seek him and for that you have to ask and to think, examine.

There is nothing frightening about a fellowship of Christians getting together to worship the God that they serve. Do you also think it is frightening when you see a bunch a people at a rock concert lifting their arms to the band and jumping up and down, doesn't that seem cultish? Thats worshipping an idol.

It's called Ecstasy... I don't mean the drug. They're happy to be in a roomful of people worshipping, they get caught up in the moment and they believe that they feel God's love. It's blissful. Similar feelings happen to people all the time in almost every religion. Haven't you seen some of the tribal ceremonies, where people look hypnotized or even hurt themselves without feeling it?

I believe this is something that you do but worship Satan yet not sober. You are probably stoned Now to think that this question is not offensive and down right disrespectful which shows that you and others lack morality! I definitely understand that you have issues.

You will find this kind of group hypnosis thing out side of religion also. It's a sort of a controlled mass hysteria that people get into when they are experiencing emotions in a group setting.
This kind of behavior is practiced by scam/cult/self-help outfits like Scientology and Landmark Forum. Watch out for this stuff be cause it's psychologically very powerful.
It's the same kind of conditioning that gets suicide bombers to blow themselves up. Or to get "Christian soldiers marching as to war..."

Something you would not know about! If you choose to call it a cult, that's OK. Call it anything you like, but until you have experienced it for yourself, don't knock it. I'm not trying to convert you to anything, i don't even go to church, but I do know they are a happy bunch of people for some reason, and if i had my Rather's i had rather be like them, than unhappy making jokes about them. There must be something to it, or that many people wouldn't be doing it, right?? Good luck!!

Group hypnosis and self-delusion.
Groupthink: A mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members' strivings for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action.
