I am a 48 yo black woman, obese. The pain is ongoing, even though I can still function daily, but it does seem to be getting slightly worse. It hurts to stand up straight after sitting for awhile.

Losing weight will help but that is easier said than done or the weight loss industry would not exist. You need to see your doctor. You may require and x-ray and MRI to determine the exact cause. My wife was obese also, and had a bulging disk which eventually deteriorated into failed back syndrome at L4 and L5 in the lower back. This caused the sciatic nerve to be pinched resulting in pain that went down her left leg. Treated early, the problem can controlled so that surgery can be avoided. If you do have spinal problems in the lower back, surgery should be the very last option as it is irreversible and has a low success rate.
