What do religious people think Gid is playing at? God created you and is omniscient therefore knows everything you will ever do (correct? or is he a bit forgetful) - so what is the point - is he just wasting time? waiting for answers to his yahoo questions?
You seem very quick to accept an omnipotent uber being - but have you seriously asked yourself what sort of thing would create this curious existance out of nothing ?- what is it trying to prove? and to whom?
Unfortunately many people seem to have very msierable existances in God's marionette show.

zero - come on dont dodge it - is he omniscient or not? you are now suggesting that God does NOT know everything - and is therefore fallible?
No-one seems to be able to rationally argue this point and keep throwing in the 'trust in god' routine - are you folks really that sheep like?

so now we have
'you have choice'
and
'establishing authority over his creation'
How can either of these co-exist with infallability or omniscience/potence - and if u accept that god is not these things - then he can clearly have a motive? arent you at all curious?

ok so it seems a few people are giving slightly wally answers to this question! not sure mine will be any better, but ill give it a go.
and by the way if you want to talk about anything then drop me a wee message :)
im a christian, so i believe in an omnipresent, omnipotent etc God, but I dont ever claim to understand his motives. in fact, ive spent the past few weeks wondering just what on earth God is playing at; ive had a really rough time, and really cant see how any good can come of it.
so im not some sheltered naive Christian who thinks everything is right with the world. i dont understand why bad things happen, i dont understand why children starve in africa every day, but yet there are more obese people than ever in the world.....but I know that there is a God who watches over it all.
there is a plan in there somewhere. and I dont think Gods trying to 'prove' anything - He has noone to prove anything to! but lets be honest - we need a reason to keep living.
if there was no God, if there was nothing to look forward to, then what would be the point in living? whats the point in playing out our existence for the sake of it? do you not think there must be some point to life?
im going to stop typing now this is beginning to look a bit like a sermon sorry!!! hope you find the answer youre looking for :)

Your question should make you think as you are already; WHY; and to be honest, You are on a journey of knowledge, understanding and faith. Forget about everything and ask your self.
If you where or are a smart scientist and you created AI (Artificial Intelligence) would you not know every thing about the AI unit. Would you not be happy to see its progress as it matures in the world, the programme has a fault would you not be happy to fix it and see how it responds.
What am trying to say is that you know everything about this AI unit. But the AI Unit has never seen you his maker. But you see its every movement with your surveillance equipment.
And you hear or see the AI unit type in Yahoo answers the exact question you are asking what would you do.
Would you be angry or would you be proud that the AI Unit is now reasoning and wants to know.
Remember that everything in life even if God knows everything is up to you to make the choices that would lead you perfectly like the AI Unit to its maker.
And since the AI unit has never seen its maker it says there is no MAKER, I CAME TO BEING WITHOUT AID.
Life is a journey set-out on to find answers.
And you will find answers some good and some not so good.
Never stop asking. Remember its not by believing that you exist.

Well, if you are actually curious about one of God's motivations as explained by basic Christian theology:
God's basically "throwing a party" and He's inviting us to join in.
The often-misunderstood concept of the Trinity is part of this belief.
The Trintiy often comes across as stupid paradox but isn't supposed to be some bizarre mystical mumbo-jumbo.
Basically, all it's saying is that God exists in a community rather than being a single individual person -- three beings who are so identical in purpose and goals, know so much about each other, care so much about each other and so forth, that they are essentially "one person."
[Imagine the best marriage, where two people become so close that they act as one unit, with the same goals, concerns, love for each other, self-giving, etc., and this is a hint at what the Trinity is.]
This relationship is literally like a party in all the best senses -- a celebration of the people involved.
Christianity says that God created human beings to "join the party" -- the more the merrier. We are all invited to come.
The caveat is that we get to choose whether or not we want to go, and become the sort of person who can enjoy the party. To be in communion with people demands certain sacrifices -- selfishness for example ruins the party.
Just like if someone showed up at your party and acted in destructive, abusive, self-centered ways and could totally "ruin the party for everyone," so there are certain attitudes and behaviors that people hold that ruin their ability to be part of a giving, loving community.
Anyway, in a nutshell, that's why God created us: To join the celebration, because He is love, and love always wants to share something good with others.
(It's often the same reason parents have children -- they experience joy in that family and want others to have that same experience.)
And so the bad stuff in this world occurs because we choose self-centered ways to pleasure ourselves -- ways that cause pain and hurt to other people and, ultimately, to ourselves.
Regardless of whether or not you "buy this," that's basically the reasoning in Christian theology -- which is the question you asked. Hope it helped.

I don't think God has "motives" or an angle. If you want to know why you are here, and why there is death and destruction in the world, the bible can explain it to you. You will also come to understand that God is not some puppeteer who has created us for his own amusement, just to laugh and watch us fall on our faces. You have a choice what or how you believe, and what your actions are. Sometimes the bad actions of others collide with good people. How do you handle it? Is the glass half empty or half full, are you trusting in God?

I dont think believers are able to be objective enough to answer your question. you are asking them to question their belief system.
Im also not sure that God needs a motive because he is not human and therefore does not suffer from the needs for a motive like man does.
I think you either believe in God or you dont. If you do the idea of god from a faith point of view is that he is omnipitent and that man is his creation. To look at the relationship any other way makes no sense.
If you dont believe in God then the question is more relevant from a theoretical standpoint as non beleivers dont have the incumbrance of faith telling them one thing where intelect and rationality tells them another.
Its a question for non believers or pragmatists i feel.
Also i feel living is about our hearts and our children and our loved ones and that is the point of our existence. Maybe that is Gods motive to give us life?

God is establishing hs authority, his rightful sovereign rule over all he has created.
With the freedom of choice we are far from marionettes. However, God is omnipotent and does not answer to the laws of time. God has created man in his image as a companion of sorts. he has given man life and the freedom of choice knowing in advance that man would basically screw things up. There are those men that have choosen to love God and it is those choosen ones that God will bless in wonderous ways both before and after the end of this system of things.

Good point....why would a perfect being -- who needs nothing, who lacks nothing, who knows everything -- want children in the first place, much less our worship and devotion?
Scott Adams (creator of the comic strip "Dilbert") once wrote a very interesting novella on the subject -- don't remember the name, but you can download it for free online. He postulated that the only thing that WOULD be of interest to God is: what would the universe be like if He Himself didn't exist? So be basically destroyed himself to create the universe, and that life's process of evolution is actually the gradual recreation of God....

I doubt we could conceive of any "motives" He may have in the grand scheme.
Isaiah chapter 55
8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
But, in my humble opinion, I submit the following as a possible reason for it all.
If you're a parent, or grand-parent, one of the greatest joys is to have the kids run to you, tell you they love you and give you a big hug. Sitting on your lap, they tell you of their day and of their joys and concerns.
You enjoy giving them gifts. At the same time, when they do something wrong, you admonish them, because you love them, so they will know better - perhaps keeping them out of danger. For those that reject you or hate you outright, there's nothing you can do for them though you still love them.
.
You've created an environment beyond their imaginations and will give them the universe when it's all said and done.
Just like you and I, God loves to love and to be loved. He IS love.
That's what He is doing.

I have faith (believing in something I can not see or touch). The scripture tells us, "Blessed are those that believe and do not see."
It doesn't matter what I "think" God's motives are. He knows about the big picture...all I see is the little picture.
May you find the grace of the Living God and His Son, Jesus!

Theists just believe a god exists. If you want to know about a God with "motives" you would need to ask Christians, Muslims, or Jews.
