Legends live on only when there are people who wish to remember them. So, in our history some live on even thousands of years later. If you stop to think of how much time has gone by, how many legends have most likely been forgotten and lost forever?

I think on some level, they are always with us. It's a part of genetic memory and what Jung described as the Collective Unconscious.
I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. Much can be learned from ancient mythology as is demonstrated by the work of Joseph Campbell. It is only when we make the leap into believing that the legend or myth is in fact an absolute truth that we get ourselves into trouble.
Ancient humanity created, and modern humanity creates stories to both entertain and instruct. As long as we know it's fiction with an entertaining message, we're okay. Anything else has the distinct possibility of creating mental rigor mortis or worse, nihilism.

Sure legends die and legends are forgotten. However, why do I think that there is more about religion behind this question. Hmmm!

sometimes legends do die but many times legends turn into myth depending upon the culture and society. myths and legends many times have a basis in truth and scholars of today have found several places of archaeological evidence because some professor took the time and effort to pursue these myths and legends proving they have historical significance.
