If anyone understands on not spending money on something that doesn't last very long it would be me!!!!!
They will not stay in a toddler bed for very long but if you go with a twin size bed you are looking at a bed that is higher off the floor than a twin size. When the child wants to get out he will try any way to get down.
A toddler bed sits closer to the ground.
Try getting twin size mattresses and laying them on the floor without the bed rails. It may look a little tacky to others but will save you money. When the child is able to get up and down easier then you can try getting the rails for the twin size bed.
You can always check in the newspaper or yard sales to see if anyone has a toddler bed. Most people will luck up on those things!

I suggest you just go get a regular bed. They do not stay in the toddler bed for long & I personally don't think it is worth buying a toddler bed. We put our son in a full size bed on his two year old birthday. We had a convertible baby bed that went from a baby bed to a day bed then it could be converted in to a full size bed but we now have our 3 month old in it so it wil not be a full any time soon. Our oldest stays in his bed all night & doesn't ever get out but once a week maybe.
Good luck. Hope this was helpful.

You can buy a crib tent which prevents them from climbing out of the crib.
They also have toddler beds now that can be adjusted later in life into a twin size bed. They are a little expensive but worth it as they will last long into their teen years.
You can also find a toddler bed at a garage sale real cheap.

My wife and I have raised three boys of our own and have four beautiful grandkids. We have never owned a toddler bed - they are a waste of time and money. Instead, we purchased a regular bed (twin or in one case a full bed) and put the side restraints on each side (these are secured by placing the supports under the mattress and provide a rail to prevent them from rolling off during the night). Right now, we have a 2 year old grandson sleeping on a full bed at night without any rails at all. You just have to adapt to your situation, but I wouldn't buy a toddler or intermediate bed - the old timers didn't do it for sure. My Mom had a baby bed for about six months after we were born, and then it went to the barn for storage - regular beds from then on.

If your really worried about the twin bed being too big, the toddler bed is wonderful. If you don't want to spend the extra money you can get a bed rail for the twin. You also might start out with just the mattress on the floor and move it up on the bed frame as he gets older. You'll never be ready, they always grow up too fast. lol.

Do what you think is right.
My husband and I turned our daughters crib into a toddler bed, then after a while we just went out and bought her a full size mattress that will fit onto her crib headboard. (Her crib was fully convertible) She sleeps in there well and we haven't had many problems and she has only fell out of bed 3 times in the last year and a 1/2.
If you get a twin size bed you will find they fall out more.
Good luck

When my son was 12 months, my wife and myself bought a full size bed for him.
Knowing that he would grow too fast and that buying a toddler bed would be a waste of money, we decided to buy the bed which it is build to have a mattress specifically for his age.
Now he is 3 years and 7 months, he uses the bed not in a 100%, only the half of it. Whenever he grows up and needs a bigger mattress, we will dispose the old one and install the new one, the bed will grow in size and we won't have to spend another bed.

Buy the Twin size bed, and some rails for the sides.
Trust me, they DO grow way to fast. And unless you have other children who could use the toddler bed, it is just a waste of money.
We bought our boys really great Twin size beds that they could use until they're 18 or older.

I put my kids in a regular twin bed when they started climbing out of their cribs. You can buy rails to put on the sides. Another thing I did was take the crib mattress and store it under the twin bed. At night, in addition to the rails, I also would slide the crib mattress out for padding in case they got past the rails. In the morning, you just slide it back under the bed.

We got our toddler bed frame from a friend, that way we didn't have to spend the money yet for a twin bed and mattress. (You already have the mattress for the toddler bed). But then when I was pregnant with our third child when our son was only 15 months, it was time to invest. That way, he was used to a 'big bed' by the time our daughter came (by that time he was 21 months) Best luck!
