When I have to face any difficult situation - public speaking, client meetings, an unavoidable confrontation - I get very powerful physical manifestations of my nervousness. My heart rate increases dramatically and becomes irregular, and my breathing gets out of control etc. It can be very difficult or impossible to hide what is happening to my body. Oftentimes, I don't even feel particularly nervous, but still I notice my heart rate climbing out of control and then when I have to speak my voice appears shaky and weak. What can I do about this?

Well, you can either desensitize yourself which you may not have time to do. Or you can take something for it. Ativan .25mg every 8 hours as needed for anxiety is a good relief. It is a small white pill to use a few hours before a stressful situation. It is a minor narcotic but worth the swallow I assure you. We all need a little help now and again. You would be surprised how many people are on this type of meds but keep quiet about it as if there was a stigma about it or something. Ativan also comes in .50 which may be a bit strong for you. Just ask your MD.

Join an acting class it might make you feel more confident about speaking in public - It just sounds like stage fright nerves to me. Sometimes all that adreneline can be a good thing to spur your on, but if you're deeply worried about it then it might be more to do with anxiety - What are you actually anxious about? Think about it....Also practice your speech, be an actress, act your way through these confrontations with people. If you act confident and in control you soon will be.

I had first time experience when I was asked to speak in a debating club and I froze in fear for some minutes and then my teacher bailed me out. I am a public speaker now as I had to conduct seminars and meetings etc., even then, at times in new environment I get the same feeling as I experienced in my childhood debating competition. So, I think it is normal for most of us and with exposure to public-speaking we can overcome such nervousness.

I went thru that....I've been through all the medication bs....ativan is a good suggestion
me...i was fortunate enough to be able to quit my job and stay home full time....I am happy and don't have to go through that anymore
alot of times it happens because you are having to do things on other peoples terms...situations your body is trying to tell you it doesn't want to be in....you can either kill it with meds(they kill part of your soul as well) or deal with it or crawl under a rock like I did

This is very natural for almost all persons who lack confidence or meek in their heart. A sort of fear overcomes ur actions. All that u can do is to rehearse the same topic at home if it is going to be known one or else compose urself, before u attack. first tell urself "calm" "slow" nothing is going to be lost. First u study the opposite party. silently.listen to what they are saying. first talk to urself, then slowly answer. Even when they confront u. confidence building positive thinking I can do attitude will certainly help u.

Sounds to me like you have anxiety. You either A) need to learn how to self medicate yourself or B) speak to your doctor, I have anxiety, and anxiety attacks except mine are far worse, I start bawling my eyes out, I called a psychiatrist and I have a scheduled appointment next month. He said more than likely I will be put on a medication that I can take only when in stressful situations like you are talking about.

Talk to your doctor, they can tell if you need medication or if you have other alternatives to controlling it, such as bio-feed back, deep breathing. The doctor is the one with the answer. Good Luck to You!!

i'd say its anxiety, go to the doctor and they will prescribe you something that will help the way you feel in those situations...my sister takes anti-anxiety pills and they work great for her.
