We do it out of respect for the decedent, it has NOTHING to do with rigor mortis, as someone answered. Rigor mortis is a temporary stiffening of the muscles, and it is just as easy to close eyes 12 hours after death as it is 12 seconds after death. Also, your eyes do not roll back in your head when you die, that is called watching too much TV.

yes, because the eye glosses over and look kinda creepy, funeral homes try to make the dead as good as possible for the living. and not closing the dead persons eye would probably creep family members out

I would hope someone closes my eyes, so I don't stare off into nothingness! I don't want to look at Dead eyes, myself.

i think i'd like my eyes to be closed if i was dead. I'd feel rude for atrring at people.

yes, because of rigor mortise- you will have a hard time after wards to close them

actually, at death your eyes roll back and all that is left to see is white.
