go to http://divx.com and download the free lastest codec from there. A codec is a COder/DECoder. It is the information Windows needs to convert the information in an AVI file into video. It has been updated, and your PC is not using the newest version.

Download and install Klite Codec Pack 2.77

download DivX player. DivX plays just about anything, including .avi files.

clearly you need to install codecs to be able to play a .avi file, else it simply won't play as you know.
