Non-specific respiratory tract infection usually refers to a viral infection of the upper (usually) and /or the lower respiratory tract (which includes the lungs). Had it been labeled as chronic bronchitis, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), pleurisy with effusion, pneumonia or pneumonitis, it would have been SPECIFIC as also an infection by tubercle bacilli (Tuberculosis). In a layman’s parley, it should mean that there is nothing to be disturbed about as the findings are very limited and towards being insignificant.

The respiratory tract starts from the nose, includes para-nasal sinuses, throat, trachea and bronchii, and finally the lungs and its covering- the pleura. Generally it remains a viral infection which causes cold like symptoms which give non-specific infection as the isolation of virus is not commonly practiced, being too costly, not readily available everywhere and finally the question –then what? Therefore these remain non-specific for the convenience of the patients as well as for the doctors. With or without treatment the symptoms clear off, but usually decongestants and a course of antibiotics is given on empirical basis.

I am surprised that you didn't ask your doctor nor did he even bother explaining it. Doctors are paid big bucks so that they can at least give you a reasonable explaination of they aren't 100% sure.
