Finally, I think I have made some head way with the topic of getting a dog, finding the true reason my dad does not wish a dog in the home. Because they smell and such, but that can alll be taken care of easily, I stated that I would be doing all that, and he denied that I did. So, I'm out on a mission to prove to my father that I can be more responsible then I already am. In hope, that one day when he finally sees that I am responsible enough in his eyes, to get a dog.

-Thankyou, Sunny.

First, buy a plant. If you keep it alive, buy something that lives in a cage, such as a hermit crab. If you keep it alive, ask for a dog. By this time however you'll probably be out living on your own and can get your own dog to neglect.

I would recommend volunteering at a local animal shelter or rescue. This is a good way to show you can do the not-so-fun stuff such as cleaning up doggie feces and urine and occasionally vomit, bathe a dirty dog, and walk a dog without having to be screamed at to do it. You also may want to trade some allowance or chores (or get a job if your old enough) to help cover costs. Dogs cost a lot of money, so you need to remember that. You won't be the only one taking care of it, your dad will have to fork out the financial things, as well as take care of the dog if you get lazy doing it. Talk with him about it, and tell him your plans. Perhaps volunteering and/or getting a job will help convince him in a few months that you can be responsible for things other than yourself.

You can prove how responsible you are to your father by starting to do all your chores ahead of deadline. Do extra chores without being asked, too. Do an extra-good job at all your chores and keep your bedroom very neat. Start doing research on the type of dog you want and the care that is involved. Look on web sites like dogster.com for information and present that information to your father. Say, for example, "Dad, I read online that walking a dog several times a day is good for his health," or whatever you find out. Find out some of the bad aspects of owning a dog (like today I read online that you have to clean the dog's anal glands... ewww! gross!) and tell him that you are willing to take care of the bad things just as much as the good things. Good luck, and I hope you get your dog because having a pet is wonderful and gives you a loyal best friend for its life!

Remember responsibity is not just feeding and taking care of. How old are you? remember the vet bills can be very expensive outside of the normal shots he needs. Most people don't realize the need for yearly dental and sometimes emergency vet bills. If you read most of these questions you will see most of them should not be here but just taken to the vet. And how many of them say they can't afford to take thier pet to the vet. Owning a dog is wonderfull but also needs to be delt with on you'r fathers terms. When you own a dog in the future I hope you will think of possibilities of being affordable also. Good luck

Uh... was there a question in there somewhere?

Maybe you can prove how animal-responsible you are by reading up everything you can about dog care. Volunteer at your local dog shelter. Take a pet first adi/ CPR class. Take lessons on how to properly groom a dog. Get a job and put the money aside to care for the dog (including pet care insurance). Show you're committed to the WHOLE dog experience.

I don't know if you are old enough, but maybe apply for a receptionist at a vet and then move up to a vet assistant? At least something to show how much you love and adore animals...
