You should resize your existing partition and shrink it. Then from that extra space that has been created now, you can create a new partition. Windows can not shrink the partition where it is itself installed. So you must use a bootable CD for this task. There are some partitioning software like PowerQuest Partition Magic, and GpartED. Though you should pay for Partition Magic, GpartEd is Open Source and you can download it for free from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828
download the iso file, and write it on a CD, then restart your computer and boot your Pc with this CD.
Then you can find your hard dist, choose your partition and from “partition” menu click on “resize/move”. Then resize your partition. It would not allow you to choose less than your used space, so your information is safe!
Then use GparEd to create a new partition on the unpartitiones space. Right click on the gray area called (unpartitioned space) and click on create! It is really easy.
At the end, click on the “Apply” button to confirm your changes. Sit back and relax till it ends. After that reboot your PC and boot your windows.

You would need a partitioning program such as Partition Magic. Windows does not have that ability on its own. PM will allow you to split one partition into two without lossing data. It will also allow you to merge two partitions without losing data in the first partition (you will lose data in the second partition).
The partitioning done using the XP CD will delete the data, so do not attempt to do it that way.

you may use any software, but it's always safe to backup your data b4 you do partition. P. Magic 8 is good. It will take longer to partition
HD w/ more data so make sure you have fully charge batteries or UPS, if something wrong happened and left unfinished, your data are just memories!!
