I have several friends that don't believe in ghosts and spirits, but they are christians. How is it then do they believe in the Holy Spirit, and that their Spirit exists in the after life?

Ever thought that they were just pretending to not believing ghost? Or perhaps because discussion of ghosts and spirits are sometimes exagerated that it sounds nonsense to some people who read only bibles and good things about the earth.

Because "ghosts" and "spirits" like that are totally different than the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is God. Not someones Grandma "come back to visit."
Once you die, your soul goes either to Heaven or to Hell, not back to earth to haunt others still alive. Where in the Bible does it say that they stay on earth in spirit form?

I disagree with your statement that spirits do not go to heaven upon the death of the believer based on 2 Corinthians 5:8

"We are confidant, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."

I don't know about ghosts but the Bible speaks of spirits, good and evil.

The bible says to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord. So the soul of a man/woman isn't bound to this earth cause he/she goes straight before the Lord when they die.

See, we have a Spirit, and a Soul. Both are different. The spirit returns to God after we die (Ecc) , and our soul will be judged: either heaven or hell (Rom).
