Jesus was explaining that His message would not be accepted by many and would split up families at times and cause conflict because of people's resistance to His word.

Jesus said in these verses that when you become a Christian, be prepared to be persecuted by your own family if they don't understand.
It also talks about loving Jesus more than anything in this world.
When you become a Christian and accept Jesus, you will find a new Life in Him, but you will also "lose" your old life and not desire the things of this world.

He meant that some would choose to follow Him, and some would not. This would create division among people. Everyone thought He came to be only the kind, loving, all-forgiving Jesus, with not a spark of justice in Him...the kind of god who would give everybody what they wanted and told them that there was no wrong way to get to heaven...they wanted a god to tell them that what they were doing was fine...sort of an "I'm ok, you're ok" kind of attitude. But Jesus was (and is!) so not that "god." He is a God of justice and He warned everyone while He was on earth that choosing to follow Him would create opposition in families and friendships...being a follower of Christ required (as it still does today) complete commitment and turning away from our old lives...not being "lukewarm" or "wishy-washy", but being serious and putting away the things that hinder us in our relationship with Him. Indeed, people that chose to follow Him were persecuted, many to the point of death (hence the mention of a sword), by those who thought that Jesus was a blasphemous infidel. It still happens today, too. Christians all over the world are being persecuted for their faith by those who insist that Christianity is the ultimate evil.
*Jesus is called the Prince of Peace, this is true. In our lives as Christians, He gives us that peace that passes all understanding...I testify to this myself as a Christian who has been thru many hard times, just like everyone else...things have definitely been tough at one time or another but I always knew that Jesus is there with me and would help me...and He always has, sometimes not in the way I expected or thought He would...but He's always there. But being the Prince of Peace in our lives as followers of Christ has no bearing on His rightful justice toward those who reject Him. You can ridicule me if you want, and call me brainwashed...but I will still believe in Jesus Christ and believe what the Bible says about Him.
*Thanks for raising this topic of discussion. :-)

When spirit comes in the truth comes out. Jesus wants to bring to light those issues in our hearts that keep us from him. Only when those issues between family members are brought to light and healed can we truly love God. Then and only then will we find peace.
I believe he speaks of the sword of truth.

That we shouldn't just sit idly and expect the world's salvation, His purpose for coming to earth, to be easy. Even with all the miracles and incredible things people witnessed Jesus doing, many people in His time did not believe in Him as Messiah. How much more so now that they have to use faith, which is much harder than seeing it in person.
Jesus is saying we will have to fight for the world's salvation. It won't come easy, but it is worth the fight.

to teach those that don't believe in Jesus (the family members) the truth. Many in ones family don't believe Jesus is the Messiah.
It necessitates a choice between Christ and the nearest relations, which would put them to the severest test.

He brought the truth, but the truth is not accepted by everyone. People are willing to hate their own family over traditions, following Christ is not popular by the people who do not follow Him and that will bring fights.
My parents and family believes in God, but I do not know if they have faith. We really do not talk about these matters because they can cause trouble. I try to talk about it sometimes, but all they see is what I am doing wrong in my life in their eyes...I still follow Jesus, not them.

I think He was being prophetic, and just stating the facts - He knew all the wars, conflicts, and atrocities that would come down the ages, that would be committed in His name.

let's see...................
My Bible says in VERSE 33, which you left OUT, says,
"But, whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."
There's a LOT more to it than the verses you show. Jesus is speaking all the way from verse 5,-all the way to 42.
You took something out of context to make it sound--not good.
I feel Jesus is saying that He is first-- and if you love anything or anybody you love more than Him---will be rejected in Heaven.
