My little boy loves playing t-ball. He was on a team this spring and he had a blast. I have also consider soccer and football!!! Just try to find some fun things he can do outside. Like ride a bike, play catch, or play with cars and trucks in the dirt. That is what my 5 year old likes doing!!!

My five year old son did soccer last fall and spring, and is ready to do it again. He's always one of the shy ones at first, but soon he's out there kicking the ball (usually the wrong direction) and having a good time. He also starts basketball this winter for the first time. I try to make sure he and his sisters go in the backyard to play (if only digging in the dirt!) for an hour or so every day that the weather cooperates. And when it doesn't, I console myself by realizing that as sedentary as it may be, he IS learning things! Like his numbers and what they look like (so he can change the channel himself) and you wouldn't believe the things he learns from other shows (Backyadigans taught him that a skull and cross bones is a Jolly Roger; from Stanley and the Great Big Book of Everything there have been a myriad of "Mom, guess what? Did you know.....")
Set a rule as to how long he can sit in front of the monitor and stick with it - and good luck!

Karate is great! T-Ball, Soccer, even a tumbling class would be good at that age. But you don't always need an organized sport or activity. Find things you can do together. Shoot hoops, get roller blades, bikes, or even a walk, plan a scavenger hunt through a local park using pictures of things as well as words. Join a boys and girls club so you can swim and meet new Friends to play with!

I think you'll get your best results by just not allowing tv or PS2. We don't own any kind of video game machine like PS2. It's very clear that those things are damaging to a child's development on so many levels.

Once he can't loose himself in those things, he will come up with other ideas of how to spend his time.

Surely you know how to keep him off the games and tv. JUST SAY NO. Toss the PS2 - it's bad for kids.

When he gets home from school (ugh, he's too young to be at school!), make him a nice snack, help him get talking, then follow his lead from there. Or say, "let's go for a walk" and find a natural place to walk and explore nature with him. Or, pull out a fun game like Candyland, Monopoly (Monopoly Jr is he's average), Yahtzee, Chutes and Ladders, mancala.

He should have blocks, other building toys, paper, paints, glue, great books, musical instruments,a dog? for walking....

You set the example - don't ship him off to some other scheduled, group activity and have someone else have him exercise a small number of minutes a week - get out and move around with him. Garden, walk, play catch, kickball, red rover if you can get a lot of kids....

Have fun.

Soccer is a terrific sport for five year olds. I coached or helped coach soccer from the time my son was 5 until he was 14. Get him in a soccer league (uniforms-Saturday games!). At 5yrs. old they love running and kicking the ball( as a parent you will find them fun - and funny - to watch), and they learn individual skills as well as team skills. At the youth level soccer is a game any kid can play regardless of physical abilities; it's about having fun not winning. When they get toward the teen years they get a little more serious about win/lose but by that time they will know if they like it that much. It is well worth your investment of time with your son. He will love it and you will too.

My son is 9 and he does like his video games as well but he also likes hot wheels, remote control cars and sports. If the mom is going to allow those games at her house there is not much you can do about that but at your house try these things and see how it goes or maybe get a game system for your house. The Wii is great and the fit board has all kinds of games associated with it that even your 2 year old would love and can make for sme fun family time when th weather is bad.

I think you should start with soccer. It is very easy to learn and its a good team sport. My son started soccer when he was 5 and he has finished his 4 year this summer. He loves it and says its his favorite sport. He also does baseball, football, wrestling and basketball. If your son doesnt like the cold, dont do hockey! My son hated it and it is really expensive.

It depends on where you are. Most communities have a stronger organization within one sport/ activity or another. I would suggest putting him into a number of activities and let him decide usually soccer, baseball and basketball are good team sports at his age. You could also get him into other alternative things such as biking, skiiing, skateboarding, rollerblading, etc. Most of all you just need to get him going and he will let you know whether or not he enjoys it.

First you need to find out what he really enjoys to play. I have four son's all much older than five. However, they have all participated in sports. Basket ball, baseball, football, soccer if really depends on what he likes. All of my son's began playing sports at a very early age. My one son began playing basket ball and football at the age of 2. That was something he was really interested in. Go in the yard and throw the football or baseball with him. (great exercise) good luck

Soccer, great exercise of running around and very little skill needed to play. They come out tired but not hurt, mentally not too challenging. It is a group activity with lots of social interaction of other kids his age. Hardest part with kids in sports, is the parental pressure, keep it fun for him.
