Mankind thinks it has come so far since the Crusades, but in reality, most of mankind has not evolved beyond primitive thinking, so yes, it only makes sense that the next great war will be fought once again over religious differences.
The common man is not to blame, of course. The powers that be (the rich and elite) have kept the majority of the world's population ignorant through lack of education, lack of food, and lack of medical care. Religion has been used as a tool to maintain peace between the classes of each religion, with the focus being that even though you may suffer in this life, there may be a better life to come.
When that focus fails, it shifts toward hatred and intolerance of those who are different. It is a story as old as mankind.
Meanwhile, the ignorance of our leaders, has led to a planet that can not sustain the current population. A planet that is dying because those who have the power, believe they control mother nature, and have failed.

This conflict is between rough-neck Islamic Fascism, a trend within Islam, and Western Liberal Democracy [pol sci talk for the various political-social systems in the west]. Not between religious organizations.
Rightwing, fundamentalist Christians get into it because they have an ideology that requires the existence of Israel, which Islamic Fascists are dead set on destroying. Fundamentalist Christians tend also to support conservative agendas, so they tend to support the current administration in general.
But the actual conflict is over the ideals of Western Liberal Democracy vs. Islamic Theocractic Fascism. And oil.

I believe that Israel and some of the Christian countries are going to be involved on one side;Muslims on the other.
Russia will, in all probability, side with the Muslims.
The Chinese would love to expands their territory into the oil-producing parts of the world.
Russia and China are inevitably going to clash some day.
Israel will most definitely be involved. Look at a map.
Israel sits at the point where three continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa all come together. It is the most strategically-placed spot on the entire planet. Israel is the crossroads of the world.
The best route through Israel is a valley which is called Har-Megiddo, or Armageddon. Ever hear that name before?

No. The era of the "World War" is gone. Sadly the term remains in use. In this era, precise targeting with potential annihilation remains the deterrent as during the "Cold War" years. And skirmishes will be fought over territorial rights, and most importantly - water. Eventually differences between religions will evaporate due to understanding all religions are based on nothing factual and are a waste of time.

Any conflict is undesirable and brings destruction and death. anybody ought to crave for peace and do each little thing to end the conflict. possibly the conflict is between muslims and christians, yet we ought to do each little thing to placed experience into both of the party, because if even one in each of them heavily needs peace, there is an chance of evading the conflict, and each and each of the evils linked with the conflict. The third international conflict, will be extra unfavourable and quick than both the first and 2d international wars practice. we've guns of mass destruction, that kill 1000's in seconds. the outcome of the conflict is likewise somewhat unpredictable, and would no longer flow to the better. for this reason forget ego, forget delight, imagine of your toddlers, and pray to god that we do not have any extra wars. Have we no longer advanced sufficient to make peace with our brothers, in spite of the indisputable fact that annoying they'd nicely be.

WW3 occurred already (also known as the Cold War) and the US won it (though lost battles, such as in vietnam). WW4 may have already begun if US administrations continue in their misguided attempts to bomb democracy and peace into existence. if they change tack, the current battles may not be part of a greater war.
