I wonder how many of the people that answered this question actually own dogs. I have lived with dogs all my life and can say for sure that none of mine have ever gotten sick from eating bits of table food. Dogs need certain foods and yes, fat is one of them. Common sense would dictate that you don't feed dogs things that are not good for them, but an occasional teaspoon serving of chocolate ice cream will not make your dog ill, but will make him very happy.
Not all dog food is good for dogs either - it is mostly corn meal and ground up meat byproducts. It is healthier to cook for your dog, but you need to know how. You can do research in the Internet.
Believe it or not, but there are still countries in this world that do not have manufactured dog food available, and somehow thousands of dogs not only survive as pets, but thrive.

This is a good question but doesn't have a short answer. Just as for people, some foods are good for you and some are bad. Plus, what's good for one is not always good for another. The other question is "what do you mean by good". Do you mean will it meet all the dog's nutritional requirements? Will it cause diarrhea? Will it be a nutritionally balanced diet? And on and on the questions go. Unless you're a dog dietician or nutritionist, the easiest way is to stick to a good quality dog food made by a reputable company. Ask your companion animal veterinarian or to one who deals with dogs and nutrition at a veterinary college. No one table food item will make a completely balanced diet by itself. Changing any food too quickly, even if it's a type of dog food, may cause an intestinal upset or diarrhea.
And remember, even dogs can have food allergies and sensitivities.
Dogs in different stages of life have differing nutritional needs, so this can complicate the answer, too.
As a basic rule of thumb, if you insist on feeding table food make sure that it is not spicy or fatty and not too high in things like salt, especially for an older animal. Chocolate can be toxic in sufficient quantities, depending on the dogs size. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Too much salt can exacerbate heart disease. Generally, the blander the better if you want to avoid upsetting the "gut". Things like plain boiled rice or potatoes, with no butter or additions are potentially not bad in the short term but talk to a veterinarian. Like I said, there is no easy answer. You need to do your research or just stay safe and avoid what you don't know for sure.

It is very bad to give a dog any kind of table food, but Chocolate is the worst. Chocolate can actually kill a dog. It is because of the high sugars in it I guess. I assume this is why they created dog food and dog treats for our dogs. But I did read on the net that if you were to give a dog meat then you should give them raw meat. Because when you cook it, some kind of chemicals get into the food or something. Well good luck and I hope someone on here can give you some good advice. I tried my best.

BAD! Our table scraps are VERY unhealthy for dogs because they simply do not contain the nutrients a dog needs to maintain their health. Cooked meat is useless to feed to dogs, because they need the minerals and other nutrients that is contained in the raw meat. Simply put: don't feed your dog table food! Get him or her on a balanced diet. Raw is the best, but if you don't want the hassle of feeding raw (which really isn't that hard) feed a food like Nutro Ultra Holisitc Formula.

Some are VERY bad. Chocolate being one of them.
Others won't poison your dog, but aren't really good for them. Giving them a nibble of your food from time to time is OK, just make sure it's not too much and/or too often as people food will make them fat. Not to mention it's not the nutrition they need.

My veterinarian told me NOT to give dogs any kind of table foods but maybe a little piece of a roll or biscuit. They also told me not to give a dog sweets of any kind, and that chocolate could actually harm them. They don't digest they're food as we do, and things like chicken bones are a choking kind of thing to them also. Stick to a good kind of dog food and that's all they need. Doggy treats and toys are really easy to find at Petsmart or Walmart.

My vet said that is OK to give a dog people food so long as it doesn't have the salt and seasonings in it. If you don't want to give them table food then she recommended Beniful. She said that the best way to buy dog food is to look at the first 3 ingredients in it, they should be meat.

Giving your dog people food is bad. Most food that people eat is too fatty for your dog & can cause the pet to become over weight. Some people food can also be poisinous for your pet, such as onions, chocolate, grapes.
Chicken or other animal bones can break easily while your pet is chewing them & can cause your dog to choke or bleed internally.
Stick to dog food & dog treats.

Generally, it's pretty bad as their systems are not set up to process all the crap we eat. As carnivores, natural, non-engineered, no-steroid, no-preservative meats aren't bad, but it's all the additives that screw up their system.
In all actuality, it's pretty bad for humans, too, but at least we have a way to break down most of the elements in our food. Dogs don't.

It is terrible to give a dog human food, you should never do that. Dogs get everything that they need from their dog food. I use Iams it is very good for them. Another is Pedigree. Don't give them human food and don't give them chocolate.
