i feel just the same. seeing those extremest people turned me off from religion completely. i have seen Muslim extremest people and have seen Christian. Every religion has their fundamentalist. actually it has nth to do with religion it is the people. That is why now i dont believe in religion, i believe in God the enegry. And i dont see how it is so important to have a religion if they all go to God after all. Religion has brought nth but problems and i say again it is what ppl has created it to be. Islam or Christianity wasnt what it is today when it was first introduced to the world. As it travelled all these centuries and unfortunately in the hands and the minds of the extremest and fundamentalist they have changed the originality and the beliefs of the religions. Islam is not the Islam the world knows it off today.Or in fact any religion. so i said why believe sth that is not pure and full of brain washed people's ideas and thoughts when i can have my own? God gave us a common sense and a brain to think and decide what is good and what is bad therefore i dont need a religion to show me that. I will be telling my kids they dont have to have a religion as long as they have a spiritual guidness....an energy that keeps us safe and helps us thru our troubled times. they dont have to listen and obey to any book or anybodys rules, they have a brain and intelligence and parents to guide them thru.

Yes, actually, I have. I have been a Christian for about 3 years. Prior to accepting Jesus Christ as Savior, I had real issues with religion, actually, today, I still do not like religion. Christianity, for what it is suppose to be, is a relationship with Christ and the acceptance of the gift of mercy and grace he gave at the cross and trying to live your life Christ Like. What would Jesus do is actually a pretty good phrase for a Christian to think about. Anyway, religion tends to make people get wierd. All the things they do and say will get them nowhere unless they live it in their hearts. There are many fakes that crowd the churches. Many preach, but do not practice what they preach when your not looking and others who preach but have no idea wehat they are even talking about. My brother is an example of this. He will preach and says he knows the Bible inside and out and is a Christian, yet, the things that come out of his mouth are horrible. Some of his actions, not so nice. Whether he is indeed saved or not is not for me to say, that is between him and God, but if we have a heated conversation, I won't hesitate to point out faults and also admit my own. My sister is another example, however, she found her way back to truth and lead me to truth as well. When she first became a Christian, she was told by the church she attended, she could associate with her family, as we were going to hell. She had to actually give earning statements to prove she gave 10% and they required that you date and marry within the church and that the elders approve it prior. Many times they arranged even dates. WHOA!! Glad she got out of that cult, she is glad to!
People really need to be careful and research and make sure that where ever they attend church, that it is being done according to the Bible, Gods word and not a bunch of twisted add ins or omissions that people thought up.
By the way, I am sorry that you feel that religious people are scary, but I understand. I was really turned off to anything regarding a church for a long time. Then I found what Christ is about.

I find ALL fundamentalists terrifying, Christian and otherwise!
It is completely astonishing to me how they are able to look at a so called holy book and take it as absolute truth. It is equally astonishing to me that when they are shown the inconsistencies and contradictions therein, that they have this eerie capacity to perform the mental gymnastics necessary to continue to believe it is absolute truth. It is a form of mental color blindness that is both stunning and shocking. It makes me wonder things like,
What if this capacity to see truth in obvious falsehood was used for nefarious purposes? Is this not a form of mob mentality whereby a charismatic leader could do just about anything he/she wanted?
This goes way beyond the Nazi caveat, "I was only following orders." This takes it to the next level. "I am acting on the truth therefore I am doing good and following god's plan."
Is it any wonder that the Inquisition took place? The Crusades? Current Islamic radical terrorism?
All reasonable thinking people have sound reason to be terrified of fundamentalism of all stripes.

Depends on which religion. The same men, women and children who knock on your door hoping to tell you about just what the Bible does say, are very happy, because they have so much to look forward to.
(Psalm 37:9-12) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth. 10 And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. 11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. 12 The wicked one is plotting against the righteous one, And at him he is grinding his teeth.

A lot of it, is that they live only for that faith or preacher.
My moms next door neighbor is so much into 700club that she even became the local 700club phone contact for prayer.
She is so nutty that you cant talk to her without talking about religion or faith.
She asked my mother to have me come by her place to fix her computer (before her husband died). All that was wrong was too many icons & 'copies of icons'..
Knowing how she was, I stated Im very busy and we need to stay on task about the pc, (other wise it would have been too much time)... plus I stated it would be $50/hr if it took more than 1hr.

They seem scary to people who are not close to God. In the beginning Adam walked and talked with God in the garden of Eden. Now people who are Christians and want a close walk with God, can be seen as weird. If a person sees the big picture and wants a close relationship with the Lord, they are not too close to the world. The eternal things are of more importance to them. Its possible to have a balanced life, but unsaved people will never understand, since they cannot identify.

I think maybe the reason is that they aren't exactly on track... we can't isolate ourselves from the world. But different "religions" (tradition) do seem to do some things I don't understand. I'm sure they have a reason for it. We can sometimes get out of balance. I am a Christian, and some people (Christian) tend to "turn me off" in what they do.

In very, very ordinary words: Evangelical = Sharing the Gospel, emphasis on the "sturdy information" and freedom in Christ. bible learn and pulpit preaching emphasizes the NT, particularly the Gospels and epistles. Interpretation of the account of introduction could be literal or allegorical, in many situations balanced by ability of two Peter 3:8 ("With the Lord an afternoon is nearly one thousand years, and one thousand years are like an afternoon".) distinctive Bible translations are many times used and used; KJV, NKJV, NIV, etc. Fundamentalist = Preaching the Gospel, emphasis on the phobia of eternal damnation (in any different case typical as hearth & brimstone stuff) maximum well known to conversion. bible learn and pulpit preaching emphasizes the apocalyptic writings in the two OT and NT, Matthew's Gospel, and the Pentateuch. Literal interpretation of the account of introduction. maximum in many situations KJV-in easy terms, especially situations narrowed all the way down to the 1611 KJV. and you may boil all of it down even added by ability of making use of purely the 1st words above: Sharing vs. preaching. yet, back -- that is totally ordinary. And there are a number of evangelicals that are borderline fundamentalists, and vice versa. that could be a notably fluid line.

I was raised in a Christian home and thank God for it every day.
My parents are spiritual, but not fanatical.
The Christians I know are much happier than the non-Christians.
There are a LOT of studies to support this.
It is sad that you had a bad example, or mis-understood them.
You might give it another look!
Peace!
