In my experience I have never heard of this, at least not in the modern army. By the way the Coldstream Guards are not the oldest regiment in the British army. The Grenadier Guards were known as the First Regiment of Foot Guards back in the day. As for the oldest regiment in the army I'm not sure about this due to amalgamations etc but the Green Howards were up there some where before amalgamation into the Yorkshire regiment this year.

The oldest infantry regiment is the Royal Scots.
The Coldstream Guards were formebd before the grenadiers, but take a "Back Seat" As the grenadiers are the most senior of the Guards Division
Monks Regt Of |Foot is the oldest. The Coldstreams are only descended from it! Any half wit can jiggle it to suit!
Royal Scots are older!

They only joined the Grenadier or Coldstream Guards because they couldn't swim...............and were not allowed to join the Lifeguards.

The reason they do this is because regiments are always trying to be better than each other, its good humoured rivalry though, and they don't mean offence by it.

I think what you will find is it is a form of sarcasm, The one unit not liking the other. It is a way of saying that they think the unit is lower than their own.
