My husband and I are trying to loose a little weight. So we've started this diet of lean meats, fruits, veggies, and whole grains. We like to eat fish, but are not sure how long it will keep in our refridgerator before it goes bad. Can we freeze it? How long can it stay in the freezer?

Most seafood will be fine when stored for a day or two, but always check the use-by dates on packaged seafood or ask advice if in any doubt. To store fish, remove it from its original wrappings, rinse in cold water, pat dry, cover and place towards the bottom of the fridge.

Store fresh and smoked fish separately to avoid mixing flavours.

Always store cooked, ready-to-eat seafood such as smoked mackerel, prawns and crab, separately from raw fish.

Frozen fish should be stored at -18ºC or colder. As a rough guide, if seafood is stored at -18ºC, the maximum recommended storage periods are:

White fish 4 months
Oil-rich fish 3 months
Smoked fish 3 months
Shellfish 3 months

The ideal method of defrosting seafood is to allow it to thaw out overnight in the fridge. Thawing seafood out in water can lead to loss of texture, flavour and valuable nutrients. You can also, of course, cook fish straight from the freezer - just add a couple of extra minutes to the cooking time.

Fish In The Fridge

Prompt repackaging as described above is very important and I also then chill the fish down by putting it in the deep freeze for up to 1 hour. As a long time fisherman, I would agree that 72 hours is the maximum for fish that has been self caught but, if purchased already packed, I prefer to cook it within 24 hours. This because the product may have already been sitting in a display cabinet for a day or two so the "packed on" and "use by" dates may give a misleading impression of freshness.

i wouldn't keep it in the fridge more than 2 days. yes you can freeze it. what i do is divide everything into serving size portions and freeze. that way when i'm hungry i take out one portion and cook it or heat it up. it goes a lot longer and keeps you from overeating. you can keep it in the freezer forever as long as it doesn't start to look freezerburned. so wrap it really good before putting it in there.

in the freezer it will be good for about 6 months but would check it for freezer burning..as for the fridge it is not very long 3 days but in the resturants we ice the seafood down even though it is in the fridge this extends the life of fresh seafood...i put in a ziploc and stick down in a bowl of ice.....
