My dentist would ask me about university whilst examining my teeth-like i'm gona be able to answer!

Because they think we are idiots who will actually try to answer the question!! And, ya know what?? WE DO TRY!! LOL

Because they spea "denti" I'm not sure about all dentists but my dentist of 11 years can carry on a perfect conversation. The first time I went he asked "how's school treating you" I replied"mind your own business asshole" he said "thats night very nice talk considering have a knife in your mouth." I think most if not all dentists have this unique ability.

He probably finds the tooth work boring and had a moment to start a conversation. It is just like the waitress who stops by your table after you have put the first bites of food in your mouth and asks you how you like the food you are eating. It fits her schedule if not yours.

Maybe they don't really want an answer! Same reason waiter/waitress asks you if everything is okay with your meal the second you put food in your mouth.

They actually tape the answer, and have a get together once a month to see who of them has the funniest sound from a patient.

They speak dentist, and can actually understand what your saying with your mouth wide open and a tool in it.
I know, it amazes me too :)

They do it purely to prevent you from answering back while they lecture you on their particular hobby horse. I expect that if you tried using sign language to answer, they would tell you to sit still and keep your hands in your lap!

They try to distract you from the pain. They want you to come back to them for more work done and not have you being afraid.

to take your mind of the task in hand its a trick they use to try to make u think of things other than the pain.
