If someone is using pain pills as an anti-depressant, that would probably fall into the category of abusing them.

I doubt it. Pain pills are not meant to be an anti-depressant. They can make you addicted quite quickly if there's no pain there for them to be dulling. I don't understand the neurology of it, but I know that if you take pain pills when you don't have pain, you get addicted much more quickly, and in a worse way, than if you taper them off as your pain tapers off. And if they were not prescribed to you for pain, what are you doing with them in the first place?

Anti-depressant is a very scary concept. There are artificial, prescription required drugs called anti-depressants that are really very dangerous. St. John's Wort is also effective as an anti-depressant, but it's all-natural. And it is not addicting. You take the same dose every day, you will not find any urge to increase the dose.

It is said that it is only effective for minor, not major, depression. This is true. But if you treat minor depression as I do, and take St. John's Wort as your good faith effort to have a good attitude, that act of will is at least as important, and far more effective, than anything a doctor could prescribe. It will effectively prevent your sliding into major depression.
