firstly you need to learn lots about dogs - some breeds are small but hyper and will be destructive if you dont have alot of time for them.. some larger breeds are quieter in nature and gentler...
DONT get a border Collie or Jack Russel Terrier - in fact stay away from all terriers - these are not dogs for first time dog owners - they are intelliegent and will destroy your home if their mental needs are not met
I would suggest a Pug, Bichon, ShihTzu etc..
BEST place to get a dog or learn about them is your local Animal Shelter/SPCA
they will let you visit/walk the dogs there so you can learn stuff and they have pamphets for free to educate you and when you are ready to get one they will help you pick the best one - also mutts make good pets too
NEVER NEVER get from a pet store - they are overpriced and the lowest qualtiy
I would suggest an adult dog - because puppies are more destructive and need housetraining (which is a 24 hour day job for 3 weeks)

All you have to do is go to a certain website ( I don't know the name ) and you can answer some questions about the kind of animal you want. They will narrow it down to just a few dogs, and you pick it out from that. They actually match a dog for you and then you can look up that particular breed and study all about raising that breed and what to expect when you get a puppy or a grown dog. Then go to an animal rescue in your area, just from this website. Its amazing but true. I also would consider getting a dog or puppy through animal shelter. Sometimes they are exactly what your looking for, the only thing is, the dog may be a (mixed breed); but you could still fall in love with the animal or animals by just walking through there. I actually was heartbroken because I knew I couldn't take them all home with me.......If you have never had a dog let alone a puppy, you had better read all you can about raising dogs or certain breeds otherwise it will overwhelm you and you may end up giving it back to the shelter or breeder. Then the transition from going to no dogs or puppy will not be such a shock, as I found out one time, the hard way. I am not trying to scare you but it is good sound advise for someone whose never had a dog before before...Good Luck, and let us know what you got!!!

So, you want to get a dog. You better get reading. Below are some websites to help you get started. Wanting a dog isn't enough, you need to be educated before becoming an owner.
Are you lonely because you don't have friends? Start there first, don't place the onus on a dog to be your one and only friend, that is quite a burden for a four-legged creature. Once you get a circle of friends you might just find you don't have time for your furry buddy and pawn him off on the humane society (then who isn't the nice friend).
When you get a dog, it is for life, not for convenience. Start reading up, getting all the information you can and get the right dog for your life. You would do the same if you were getting a doctor, boyfriend/girlfriend, surgery, new car, house or apartment, so why not take the same amount of care with your new four-legged friend?
Happy reading & searching.

You should go and get yourself a really good all-breed dog book. That way you can research the breeds, find the one that's right for you (because everyone thinks their own dog is best), and you can also get info in there on the dog's temperament, grooming needs, health concerns, energy levels, etc. A good book will also give you lots of general info on looking after a dog. You need more information than you can really get here. Good luck finding a dog!

It sounds like that your grandmother had either one of the following dogs, a shitzu, or a snouzer, or a yorkie terrier. You sound like that you would like a yorkie. They are so adorable. However they are really expensive and they get no bigger than a chihuahua. You can go online and find out if anyone is selling any animals. Most of them offer free shipping. You may find what you are looking for there, or you can always go to the nearest shelter and look there. Good Luck, and I hope you find the kind of dog you are looking for.

Dog's are wonderful pets.
I suggest a tea-cup poodle. They don't have dander and are very cute. I know a family that has a miniature greyhound. It is the sweetest dog. I don't think I have ever heard it bark.
Go to your local shelter or pet smart or other pet shop to find out information on how to care for a dog.
I'm sure you could find a book somewhere that has pictures of dogs. Maybe you could find one like your Grandmother's. Do an Image search on Yahoo.
Good Luck!

go to your local animal shelter and adopt a dog. Get a book on dogs and read up. There isn't enough time or space here to tell you all the things you should look for and do for a dog. Biggest thing though is TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET for vaccinations and any illnesses. Do NOT try to treat at home with those silly all natural remedies

I have a pomeranian. They generally weigh between 3 and 7 pounds. very cute and loyal dogs-look fox like. If you get a registered dog then I have learned AKC is what you should get. I found mine in an ad from the newspaper. You can learn more about different breeds of dogs from the akc website.

I have a small dog just like the one you grandmother had. He`s a mix so there is no official name for him. He really is my best friend. Please don`t go to a pet shop to buy one because the poor dogs usually come from "puppy mills" Try to find one at your local pound or SPCA where you can choose each other. When you go to the vet ask for some literature, they usually have it on hand for free.

OK... First things first... Small dogs are usually stubborn and stupid... I know this from experience... But once you get past that... You probably want something like a Cocker Spaniel or a Schnauzer... They are really good usually... Try to stay away from the Terriers... They can get mean... Another thing is if you want it full blooded or mixed... Full blooded ones are good for AKC and you can take it to shows and things... But you are looking at about $200 - $300 for one... Mixes are nice cause they are cheaper to buy but you don't know what traits they will have...
