Hi! Your psyhiatrist will be the one to be able to diagnose your troubles. Make sure you have a good psych, if possible, take one that has been recommended by a trusted doctor, friend or family member. I guess you refer to lithium because you think you have bipolar disorder. There are different forms of this disorder, that's why you need a good psch. The medication to be taken are different for each person. I have been diagnosed with the disorder (in a light form with more severe problems with downs and depressions than manic episods or highs) at age 36. All my life I have avoided doctors and pschiatrists because I was scared of taking mind and mood altering drugs. Well after a moderate depression (meaning not severe enough to want to put an end to my days), I started to get fed up. I had done everything I could to help myself in the past. But I am seeing a psych now and taking lithium and am feeling much better. I am glad I took this decision. Don't worry about lithium, it is a well known substance. Good luck and "bon courage" (courage)!

I have been a bear like that too. When I was in college I had no friends, people gave be a wide space wherever I went. It wasn't that I wasn't likeable, but when I went bad I went really bad. I had nobody to understand until much later. When I panicked it was a total erruption of emotion. I would bawl hysterically, and if anyone tried to help I would snap at them and drive them away. What really helped me - please try this before you try drugs, if it works you have saved yourself from chemical intervention. Go buy a great pair of running shoes and use them. Every day. When you roll out of bed in the morning run. If it's raining do it anyway. If you break your leg do it anyway. This has been the cornerstone of my recovery, and it's really worked. It saved my marriage, it has helped me to have friends, and it has made me succeed in my job. It doesn't matter if you're not in good shape, just push your body as hard as you can. Don't hurt yourself, but do demand performance. This will release endorphines into your system that help combat mood swings and anxiety, and it gives you a genuine sense of accomplishment that you will carry with your through the day. You will find yourself way less prone to panic, and happier in general. Try this between now and the time you see the psych and see if it helps. I really believe in this method. It saved me from drugs, built my self esteem, (i haven't had a panic attack in 3 years) not to mention heart health and seriously lean legs. Good luck, and don't be too hard on yourself.

It sounds to me like you're bi-polar. I would NOT recommend lithium, it causes weight gain. Topomax & Paxil work pretty good together for me, but of course, everyone is different. They will try you out on a couple low dose drugs to see how you do with them. Be straight up with your doc and let them know if the drugs aren't working or if they are working. The worst thing to do is be taking the wrong medication. Each appointment they'll ask how you're doing, tell them exactly how you are reacting to the meds. They will either increase your dosage or change your meds. Don't be afraid to ask for samples, they get them free and they can cost quite a bit of money, especially if the meds don't work for you then you have bottles of pills you'll never take that you paid for. Definately also for something for your anxiety as well, Xanax is good but is very habit forming. I recommend Buspar, but thats just me.

Good luck.

No lithuim is not a good drug..,watch what you take because it can screw up a chance for insurance in the future.Try to remember that panic attacks can cause you more harm over nothing. You can over react to something simple and really have problems.I know this sounds strange but lamaze classes teach you a form of self hynosis and it has helped me through so much in life.It shows you how to relax..,try looking into that and you may not need any meds.Remember you can beat beating yourself up.Good luck and god bless.

sounds like you have bi-polar but I'm not a doctor and I don't think they give out Lithium as medication for that any more. they have new better drugs with less side effects.
