Just curious how to handle it. Some children are new friends from school and I wouldn't expect them to bring a gift at all.

I see where you're coming from, but I think amost everyone will want to give a gift anyway, even if it's just some really simple. I just see you writing 'no gifts' and some people going ahead and giving gifts, and the kids who don't give gifts are going to be sitting there while everyone else is showing off the gift they are givng. Might make those kids feel bad. I can't think of a party I've been to where someone doesn't bring anything. I mean I think most people can afford a one dollar gift at a dollar store, or even make their own gift.

I think that is fine. You could say something like "Your presence is your present... no gifts please." The amount of toys that some kids get for their birthdays is out of control. I think just making it their special day would be fine. They can play games and eat cake. If some people do still bring presents you should put them in another room and have your child open it after everyone leaves.

I don't see anything wrong with writing that on there. I also don't see anything wrong with everyone bringing a gift. It's usually understood that you bring a gift to a birthday party!

I think a No gifts necessary Note IN the invitation would be socially acceptable.

In this situation I would say it is good to do it. You don't want kids not to come because they don't have the money to buy a gift.

It's polite, but I would put "No Gift Necessary" so that they know they can bring one if they like... it sounds a little more friendly :)

I think it's a perfectly acceptable thing to say! who is going to say "Oh my God, this person doesn't want me to empty my pockets to buy their kid a gift. I'm so angry!" LOL I think it would make people happy. :) Plus it cuts back on people think you're having a party just to get some loot.

That's part of the deal - you provide the party, cake, ice cream, etc. and they bring the gift.
