Yes, I think all Branches have them. I was told that the Marines keep their bread for throwing and not eating. (Probably a rumor) I guess if they don't like you they butter it before they throw.
The balls I went to usually have a guest of Honor, and a guest speaker and a ceremony of Posting the colors and a military band that you might find surprisingly good. They sometimes have several toasts so if you are a non-drinker you should make sure you order a coke or fruit juice before they start all of that. The Army's Artillery Punch is something to see them make. The ceremony for the POW MIA is very touching.

Yes, but I think the Marine core makes a bigger deal of them than they other branches.

yes the Navy's one is coming up very soon, the Marine Corp is in November [I think] the Air Force and Army have theirs, the only one I am not sure about is the Coast Guard...........maybe someone else knows

yep, the Navy has them too. Depending on where you are stationed they can be a really big deal or not so big.
