That's right! Listen up people: What do you think your pastor is doing when he reads a verse from one book, then jumps to another in the other end of the bible? He's picking and chooseing what verses will support what he's trying to say, taking them completely out of context. I could make an anti-christian speech and quote from the same book and show how it supports my views too. That doesn't make it right. That's why Jesus himself called you people sheep. Wake up!!! Think for yourselves.

You seem to have a pretty big chip on your shoulder Selnyk. That's okay, I can see how today's church can do that to a person. But you seem to put a lot of energy attacking the Christian belief system. Had you put that much energy into trying to understand why Christians believe and act as they do you could come off as less ignorant. Now, on to your question:
Martin Luther used a method of interpretation that has mostly fallen along the wayside. Its called Sitz im Leben, roughly translates to "Situation in Life." One must take into consideration who the writer of certain passages were, who their audience were, the nature of the problem being discussed, and so on. Whatever it meant to a Hebrew or a Greek 2000 years ago or more, it holds the same meaning today. If the Bible is indeed the Word of God as Christians claim then every word of it still applies. One must first research the Sitz im Leben of the author and the receiver, and then apply the same lesson to their on Sitz im Leben.

I think many people twist the scriptures. They read something and it stricks a nerve and change it in their own minds so that they aren't living against that saying. People don't like to know that they are sinning a lot. Not just the basics of the 10 COmmandments but you should not curse, don't gossip, don't envy, don't get out of control, don't get angry, do be judgemental, no premarital sex, no lusting, not indecent thoughts, ..the list goes on. We do this things a lot and often. But we don't see them as sins. When we read the Bible and find out that we are sinning, we either go to confession and start over again or we change the meaning of the verses to fit our lifestyles. This is blasphemy. God's words are His words. We have no right to change them or change their meaning. God's words have never changed over the centuries and never will. What He said to the ancient believers still applies today. We have just changed our outlooks on life since our knowledge has expanded and we see that God's words might not be able to be incorporated into today's society. Thus we change the words or have our own interpretations of the Bible. This is a huge mistake and has made life more difficult for us.
Read the Bible, read it in Hebrew and learn the ancient languages to fulling understand it's true meaning. Pray to the Lord and Holy Spirit for discernment and the Truth will be shown to you. Then live your life accordingly.

I see no irony, only a belief and faith of a religion which can be used as one deems proper. Many Christians do take the Bible at its word and do not "twist the scriptures", but you don't like them either, so what's your point? How many Christians have you converted to your way of thinking?

Oh yea - I know just what you are saying.
I had a co-worker who kept sending me Jesus stories trying to convert me. So I sent him an email that had been going around the Pagan circles basically saying that Jesus preached tolerance and not to judge, and that Jesus said of one Pagan - a Roman soldier - that you would not find a better should in the priest of the temple and that Pagan had a spot in Heaven - (this was from a Christian telling people not to judge us)
.
Well this person got all bent out of shape - how dare I (a mere Godless Pagan) use scriptures and got his pastor to send me a letter saying that was taken out of context (even though that is what it said)- that my type people are not to be tolerated and that you had to be a scholar of the bible to interpret it correctly. I kind of told him to shove it and he said I was hostile because I was afraid of if I heard the truth I would lose my religion. I finally told the told the pastor to ffffff off in no uncertain terms. I didn't have time for his judgmental condemning views.

I hate to agree with you - being Christian myself - but I guess that's why we've got such a bad rep. but please don't classify all Christians as the same. I like to look at the Bible as a whole and don't do the memory verse thing, I can make statements of my own without patching words from the Bible to suit. If you take things out of context to make a Christian statement you can just as easily take them out of context to make an anti-christian statement. Neither of which, in my opinion, is the right thing to do.

I definately get it -- and I'm a Christian!
I think this type of answer only demonstrates that the person doesn't truly know or understand why, for example, Leviticus no longer applies. If the answerer truly understands, he or she should EXPLAIN! You're a reasonably intelligent person who tends to consider differing opinions. Too many rabid Christians fail to see this and miss their opportunity to write something meaningful.
Peace.

I am a Muslim woman who wears a face veil.
I want to know when the christian women will follow their own bible (actually the teachings of Paul that we reject) and "stay silent in the church" and "cover their head."
In their religion, everything they ever do is already "forgiven", so they basically have a free ticket to say or do whatever they want. Satan must be happy about that.

You are not to try to mold what the scripture is saying to fit your need. Some people leave out scripture verces because without them it changes the entire meaning of what God is saying, so it wont force them to change their sinful lifestyles.
For example...
They will say that loves everyone so He must not be against homosexuals. Homosexuality is a sin. It is an abomination. They refuse to read and accept the scriptures that say that. God does not allow man to lay with man or women to lay with woman, Adn the bible clearly says this.
Romans 1:25-29 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
You must accept the entire bible as it is, and not leave out things just so you can make them fit your sinful lifestyle. We are to conform to God's laws, and not ask God to accept our sinful ways. Whom do you serve? God or satan?

I think the same irony runs across all book religions. Anything written eons ago that claims it is the one and only true word of god, runs this risk. Like that weak link in a chain, either the whole thing is true or it collapses and falls apart.
