If the car has insurance, anyone would be covered while driving it. If the driver shows an insurance card, the officer would not be able to determine that a friend was not covered.

Were you speeding?

Ok, so you're asking two different things here from what I can see. First, if you got a ticket, you got it for speeding, and it's your ticket, not the car's ticket.

Secondly, the police won't be able to determine if the person's insurance "covers" the driver simply by there not being proof of insurance. If you have permission, the insurance will cover you, but you'll still get a citation for not having proof of insurance in the vehicle.

You are in the sh*t if you are in UK

Driving without insurance is the drivers responsibilty, not the owners. The owners insurance may have a clause of "any driver.... with the owners permission", but not always, so check that first.

If there is no cover you could try to get some back dated..... the cost ain't cheap though.

Speeding ticket you may be able to argue, but if you were actually stopped and they got your driver details as well then a judge may allow the error. Only one way to find that one out!!

Good luck

When driving a friend's car with their permission you will normally be covered by your own insurance rather than his, at least 3rd party. If you don't have any insurance yourself, you could be in big trouble.

Knowing the way the courts work, the speeding fine will probably be dismissed on this technicality (given they dismiss them for the speed limit sign having the wrong border) - but it's only peanuts, relatively speaking: driving without insurance is much the more serious charge anyway.

Okay, first they asked for your license, and wrote down that information also, perhaps even ran your license so that the log at the dispatch station would have that information also. Even if they wrote down the plate wrong, they still know who you are, so those that have said just ignore it, are wrong. Don't show for court, bench warrant issued, the knock on the door follows, eventually.

As far as insurance goes, the insurance is on the car, not on the driver. If you are driving with permission, you are covered. If the friend had no insurance, explain that to the judge. Say you assumed when he allowed you to drive his car, that everything was in order. You might still have to pay a fine for driving without insurance though, or he may reduce it for you. But show up for court...sorry, tell your 'friend' to show up for court on the date he or she is supposed to.

Even though the car reg is wrong, the ticket usually will have your lic # on it, and the majority of judges will typically allow the mistake, which means you will still have to pay the fine. And if you drive in a state that requires insurance, if the policy does not cover you, as the operator of that vehicle, you are responsible.

First, the judge has the ability to determine whether the error was inadvertent or not, such as transcribing 2 numbers, and determine whether the case should be thrown out or not. It is NOT an automatic dismissal.
Secondly, all insurance in the US covers the vehicle, not the driver. If you have permission from the policyholder to drive the car, there is no infraction.

If the police have written the number plate down wrong then thank your lucky stars cos you are off the hook.
As for insurance, it is up to the person driving to sort out their insurance, whether or not its their car, so you are a bit in the sh!t with that one! Only thing I could think is you get someone to backdate an insurance policy for you.

Regarding the ticket you would get off cos they registered the wrong car, but being caught without insurance is pretty serious and you cant really wangle out of that even if you do have permission
