You can spend a LOT of money for fancy mixes and equipment, but I made beer the cheap 'n' easy way for years. If you like a dark beer that's more like Guinness than Budweiser, here's what to do:
1. Start saving bottles with screw caps. Clean them well.
2. Get a 5-gallon crock or clean, food-quality 5-gal. bucket. Schools and fast food outlets like Subway have them for free or a buck or two.
3. Pick up a can of Blue Ribbon Malt, a 5-lb. bag of sugar and a packet of brewer's yeast at the supermarket. Remove the label and scrub the can.
4. You'll also need 3-4' of small plastic hose for siphoning.
Set the crock on the counter if possible so you won't have to lift it later. Temperature should be room temp. Scrub and cut into bite-sizes enough potatoes to cover the bottom of the crock. In a large kettle, heat several quarts of water and dissolve the sugar in it. Add the malt, then drop the empty can in and swirl it around to get all the malt out. Bring to a boil and pour over the potatoes. Add enough cool water to fill the bucket with tepid (body temp) water. Dissolve the yeast in a cup of warm water and stir into your mix.
The brew will begin to "work" and ferment. The process will take 5-7 days depending on ambient temp. You'll know it's ready when a bubble or two form every minute. (Timing is important. If the mix is too active your bottles will explode). Assemble your bottles and put a tsp. of sugar in each. Set a chair by the crock on the counter and begin siphoning the beer into the bottles. Stop when you get to the dregs! Leave about 1" head space and cap tightly. Place the filled bottles in a cool place, like the cellar, and allow to sit for a couple of weeks minimum. Uncap, pour, enjoy!

Everything you could possibly want to know about brewing *good* beer at home can be found here:
http://howtobrew.com
Then do a google search for home brewing supply stores in your area for all the things you'll need. You *can* do it the cheap/easy way, but the beer will suck...period.
You can make an alcoholic brew with nothing more than a 5 gallon bucket of warm water, 10 lbs of sugar, a can of tomato paste, and a packet of quick rise yeast...and it'll knock you on your butt, too...but again, it'll taste like a monkey's butt or worse.
