I have tried puppies verses kittens, and I am happier with a cat. I tried real hard with a wonderful Boxer named Reba, she was smart and fun, but as she grew I couldn't handle the course hairs that would be everywhere, the odor a dog naturally produces and the dirt that she brought each time she wanted to go potty.
Now a cat is less maintenance, you don't have to rush home to let her out to use the bathroom, you can leave for a few days and leave her in the house and know everything will be ok. You don't have to bathe cat. Cats are loving, just like dogs, but the only maintenance is a brushing every so often and clean the litter box every few days.
My choice would be a cat. Especially if you have children, dogs require much more attention that you could be giving to your kids.

I LOVE cats!!! They are my favorite pet. I only have one at the moment. She is a little over a year old. She is like my baby or something. I just spoil her so much, and I have this special bond with her that I dont have with my 2 dogs. Cats are very affectionate at times and they are so much fun to watch when they get into things. And my cat always knows to use her liter box. When she starts going out side of the litterbox and else where that is my q to go and change the liter for her. But I try and keep it clean every other day. Are you thinking about getting a kitten? They are just the cutest when they are so little.

I think cats are great pets. They offer the companionship some people need, and they're therapeutic to have around. They're also easy to care for. Training is usually a fairly short affair, and grooming is minimal. Basically, all you really need to worry about for the rest of their lives is veterinary care (once a year unless something unexpected comes up), quality food, and keeping their litterbox clean.
That being said, I also love dogs. They're harder work, but can be a bit more fun:) I have two cats, and am planning on adopting a dog soon.
The person who pointed out that his cats scratch and eliminate innappropriately.....so he votes for dogs because his dogs don't do that....that's probably because his dogs are trained, and his cats aren't. It's pretty simple. People seem to think that dogs need training, but cats are a "lost cause". It's stupid.

I used to really dislike cats, but always had one for my daughters. When my Girls moved out they brought two kittens to me, and wow, who doesn't love 6 week old kittens?
So I kept Elvis & Priscilla, then before I could have them fixed, Elvis got Priscilla pregnant. I was in denial for a while until I felt the babies move! I didn't actively search for homes for the babies, and well, whew Priscilla only had 2 . . . easier to keep 2 grandbabies! lol
SO, Elvis and Priscilla have twin boys . . . Kipper & CuJo. All four of them get along so well, its truly wonderful . . .
and as for me? The original cat hater? Well, now I'm accused of being the crazy cat lady . . . I love my darlings and can't imagine life without them . . .they are each so different and hey . .. I'm usually guaranteed one snuggler . . .if not all!
Cats . . .yes, they are delightful!

Love them. Independent, clean, don't need to be walked in the rain or freezing cold. And can be left alone for a few days, with plenty of food and water.
Also very affectionate.
When a cat loves you, it's because you're its friend. That's a certainty. Not necessarily so with a dog. You could simply be the "leader" of the "pack".

They are great! My cat is 2 yo and he is more like a puppy than a cat. He follows me everywhere, cuddles me lots and gives me the 'puppy eyes' when I have to leave the house. Who could ask for a better companion? :-D
