it depends on the year. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I'm not sure how it is now but back in my day there were four different versions of the test each year... one for the west coast, one for the east coast, one for the central plains and one for the southeast and Texas. Which test you got depended on where you lived. Some guys who were desperate to get into college flew out to Chicago to test there because they heard it was the easiest of the four.... sounds silly to me.
