Actually when people die; they're asleep in the grave. Death is called a sleep (Matt.9:24; John 11:11; 1Cor.15:51; 1Thess.5:10).
The spirit goes back to God that gave it!(Eccles.12:7; Psalm 146:4)
******************************...
So to answer your question; you're in the (first death)grave until the resurrection(1Thess.4:13-17).
SHEOL OR HADES, THE FIRST HELL
The first term in Greek and Hebrew means the grave. It's the grave where the dead await the resurrection.
GENESIS 37:35---I SHALL GO DOWN INTO THE GRAVE.
PROVERBS 15:11--HELL & DESTRUCTION ARE BEFORE THE LORD.
ECCLES.9:10---NO WORK...OR KNOWLEDGE...IN THE GRAVE,
MATT.11:23---WILL BE BROUGHT DOWN TO HADES
1COR.15:55---O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY
1st Resurrection: The saints and Jesus will be teaching others the true message of God on earth(Zech.14:9,11,16-19; Rev.5:10; 20:4-6; Isaiah 62:7) the 1,ooo years; the saints will be ruling over cities.

Then the one's that don't obey will be killed - 2nd death(Isaiah 65:12,20; 66:17); these are the one's that will be in the second resurrection. So everyone is going to (Isaiah 66:19)hear the true message of God--so noone will be without excuse.
GEHENNA, THE SECOND HELL
The second term in New Testament means the place of fiery destruction of the wicked.
MATT.5:22--...BE IN DANGER OF HELL FIRE
MATT.10:28--TO DESTROY BOTH BODY AND SOUL IN HELL
What they do with it is up to them. God doesn't want anyone to perish(2Pet.3:9); he wants them to come to repentance. Then after this the judgement(Rev.20:11-15) and the New Jerusalem coming out of heaven(Rev.21 and Rev.22)
When Jesus comes back!

The dead are unconcious with no thoughts or feelings
ECCLESIASTES 9:5 & 10 & PSALM 146:4
The only hope for the dead is a future resurrection onto the earth
JOHN 5:28,29 & PSALM 37:29
Lazarus had been dead for parts of four days but didn't say anything about being anywhere else when Jesus raised him
JOHN chapter 11
(verse 24 shows that his sister believed in a future earthly resurrection)
To say that a person or personality survives in some way after death is an extention of the lie that Satan first told Eve
(GENESIS 3:4) He said that she wouldn't die but she did.
Beliefs should ALWAYS be backed up with Scripture
The only hope for our loved ones that have died is a resurrection in the future onto the earth.

One "sleeps" as it were, awaiting to be awakened in the resurrection. -- Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:2; John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15; Revelation 20:12-14.
The soul that sins dies, according to Ezekiel 18:4 & 20, so that is not a part of us that continues alive. The dead are like asleep, unconscious. -- Ecclesiastes 9:5-10; Psalm 146:4; compare John 11:11-14.

If you study your bible it says that your breath goes forth, your body returns to the dust it was made of and in that day your thoughts perish. In Eccl. 9:5-6 it says you have no thought whatever. Many places it speaks of it as a sleep and in 1 Thess. 4:16-17 it states if you are one of Christ's people, you will be awakened and taken back with Jesus when He comes again to Heaven. If not, you will wait till a thousand years have gone by and then will rise again but only for a short time and then will be burned up.

It depends what you believe; there is no one proven theory of what happens, it's a matter of belief and opinions.
For some people, reincarnation is the answer, for others, you go to Heaven or Hell, others also believe in Pergutory, some believe you die and that is it.
There is no one set answer.
Physically, your body dies. Your hair is released from your scalp (making it seem that your hair is growing), you are either buried or cremated.

Jesus and God refer to death as a sleep and after the comming again of our Lord all must go before Jesus in the seat of judgements where he will shine light on all of our deeds.

The first thing is that the Heart stops beating and/or lungs stop breathing. Body cells no longer receive supplies of blood and oxygen. Blood drains from capillaries in the upper surfaces and collects in the blood vessels in the lower surfaces.
Upper surfaces of the body become pale and the lower surfaces become dark. Cells cease aerobic respiration, and are unable to generate the energy molecules needed to maintain normal muscle biochemistry.
Calcium ions leak into muscle cells preventing muscle relaxation. Muscles stiffen and remain stiff (rigor mortis) until they begin to decompose. Cells eventually die and the body loses its capacity to fight off bacteria. The cells' own enzymes and bacterial activity cause the body to decompose - muscles lose their stiffness. Rigor mortis refers to the state of a body after death, in which the muscles become stiff. It commences after around 3 hours, reaching maximum stiffness after 12 hours, and gradually dissipates until approximately 72 hours after death. Rigor mortis occurs due to changes in the physiology of muscles when aerobic respiration ceases.
Muscles are made up of two types of fibre. These fibres have connections between them that lock and unlock during muscle contraction and relaxation. These connections are controlled by a biochemical pathway within the cell, which is partially driven by the presence of calcium ions. The concentration of calcium ions is higher in the fluid surrounding muscle cells than it is inside the cells, so calcium tends to diffuse into the cell. High calcium levels inside the cell drive the biochemical pathway in the direction that maintains muscle contraction. To relax, muscle cells must expel the calcium ions from the cell and this requires energy molecules to pump them across the cell membrane.
After a body has died, the chemical reaction producing these energy molecules is unable to proceed because of a lack of oxygen. The cells no longer have the energy to pump calcium out of the cell and so the calcium concentration rises, forcing the muscles to remain in a contracted state. This state of muscle stiffening is known as rigor mortis and it remains until the muscle proteins start to decompose.
Grave wax, or adipocere, is a crumbly white, waxy substance that accumulates on those parts of the body that contain fat - the cheeks, breasts, abdomen and buttocks. It is the product of a chemical reaction in which fats react with water and hydrogen in the presence of bacterial enzymes, breaking down into fatty acids and soaps. Adipocere is resistant to bacteria and can protect a corpse, slowing further decomposition. Adipocere starts to form within a month after death and has been recorded on bodies that have been exhumed after 100 years. If a body is readily accessible to insects, adipocere is unlikely to form.

There's very little change actually. A lot of folks don't even realize they are dead. The best movie I've seen that depicts if is "What Dreams May Come".
