You are thinking of absinthe.
I've had a number of different brands. It has an anise (licorice) flavor to it, so if you don't like licorice you wont like it. There are some so called "absinth" products that don't use anise but those aren't real absinthe.

If by real you mean "does it exist" yes, but you have to do your research to get something good. If by real do you mean "will it make me hallucinate, see green fairies, make me go crazy, or any other myth" No, and it never did.

It is not illegal to own but it is banned to import. So if found by customs it can get confiscated.

I would suggest reading the sourced wikipedia article, and the external links at the bottom.

It is legal to have absinthe shipped here from another country, but not to purchase it here. You are going to pay upwards of $130 to get the good stuff online. Many people do not drink it properly. . . so do some research. I like the fire ritual. In short, you have a slotted spoon. You dunk one or more sugar cubes in the alcohol, put them on the spoon, and light them on fire (the alcohol will burn and melt the sugar relatively quickly) then drink. There are other methods that work well, also. Happy drinking!!!

Fake absinth is to be had in France... it sucks though, some of the essential elements are taken out of the new formula and it still tastes a lot like basic pastis.

Real Absinth was never made illegal in Spain, but I don't know how good what you find there is.

You can purchase fake Absinthe here in the states, but it sucks. My boyfriend bought it online overseas and shipped it here. It was like $70 and it was a little better. I don't know if it's illegal to do that, I know it's illegal to sell it in the states, but I don't think it is if you get it online. We never did see the green fairy though. I hope you have a stomach made of steel, and you like licorice. It's hella strong!
