666 is commonly believed to be the number of the beast as stated in Rev 13:18, but... some claim that it has been wrongly translated (as many other things in the bible) and that the true number of the beast is 616.

Amazong, all that time ago and John the Divine used his magic mushrooms to such effect that he was able to predict how much money I had in the bank :-)

Seriously, Revelations reads more like a 1960s drug induced hallucination. Apparently, he is now believed to have been on drugs so maybe that's why he invented such fanciful stories. However, the concept of numerology (gematria to the Jews) is simply that if each letter of the alphabet has a number, then you can assume that all words producing a given number are related. I believe that 666 once added up to "Rome" which makes some sense. All the rest though - whores riding on beasts etc., just makes good reading for those who like fantasy tales.
In any case, regarding the question, Revelations calls 666 the number of a man - NOT a devil. (unless he sha**ed the whore of Babylon)

The number 6 is the number of man specifically. 3 means complete.

'six hundred, three score and six' means 666 which is the number given to the beast. This has several meanings and is very symbolic. But 'completely earthly' would be the most accurate representation. The idea being of the world and opposite of God.

Therefore the beast will be of the God of this world and possibly of mankind in some way. It will be worldy oriented and not of God.

However, we can't know the full story as that time period is not upon us yet.

Some ancient Greek manuscripts of Revelations say 616. Maybe the number is 616 instead of 666.

Nope. Six is the number of Man. Three is the number of God. 666 is the representation of Man making himself God. The number was given to the Antichrist, who would make himself God. The Antichrist is a son of the Devil, but not the same person as...

Rev.13:18 "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

666 is the number of the beast.
The beast is not the devil.
The devil was just another angel gone wrong.

No, it is the number of the beast as recorded in Revelation 13:18. "If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."

I have also heard the number is 616; but in studying Revelations,

600 means warfare,
60 means pride,
6 means men.

666 also represents
political system
religious system
economic system
