If you take down the full details of whoever is sending you these emails contact the nearest South African Police Department to the area where they are coming from.
You can find the details of the police stations on the Internet by typing in South African Police,or you may want to try the South African Embassy.
You are right these are scams and should be avoided.

The best thing to do is report it to the email system it came from.
For example if it's sent from name@hotmail.com then forward it to abuse@hotmail.com remember to include the headers.
Hotmail will then shut the account down. Which is annoying for the scammer as he will lose not only his email address but his whole account where he may have stored emails of other people he was scamming.
I always do this and have many accounts closed every week, if everybody did this the scammers would find it very had to run any scam at all.

THis have been going on for a hundred yers; Orginally. it was done by old fashioned mail. There is nothiong to do except ignore them; do nott respond as this is assure them that your email is valid. The goverment is well aware of threm and do little. Similarlly, look at all the scams going on with frauduland email telling that its your bank, credit card, paypal, etc. The current goverment is doing little about these.

Don't open them. Ignore them and hit the spam button on your internet programme. Block the mails if they keep coming from a particular address.
IF there is a crime involved - which surely there is but we cannot prove it - it is being committed in South Africa and not the UK so the UK law enforcement would have a tough job investigating it.
Or contact your internet service provider and seek advice.

Yeah, if I only had a dollar for every email I have been getting on this type of offer from Sierra Leone, S.Africa, Kenya - I will be so rich, I would not need them.
But you know what I do? I do not even read them, just pick and drop in the delete folder. Yup, they are not worth your time.

Scamorama (www.scamorama.com) is a wonderful resource - not only do they give advice and have links to law enforcement websites and other tools, but they publish correspondence between scammers and those folks who scam the scammers - who fool the scammers into sending compromising pictures, silly documents, or even sending the scammee money.
Check out http://www.met.police.uk/fraudalert/ for UK law enforcement links.
Have fun, be safe, be smart ;)

I used to get loads. .. .i actually replyed to one via email in the topic I put: maybe I can help / My details.... soemthing that prompts them to open YOUR email then type out a complaint and asking them to remove you from thier mailing list. You can also prevent more emails like this by using the BCC when sending an email to mulitple recipients. This hides all the email addresses from programs that collect email addresses.
Oh yeah then block them or SPAM them!!
