A hangover is caused by two things. The first is that the alcohol you drink replaces water in your body. This lack of water reduces your body's ability to run what is known as the Krebs cycle. This cycle is a major function of cellular function and is greatly disturbed when drinking too much. Secondly, there are impurities and toxins in alcohol that when consumed have a very unpleasant effect on the human body. This is the reason for aging alcohol in oak barrels lined with charcoal. The charcoal will draw out these toxins and purify the liquor. This is also why the super premium vodkas don't give such bad hangovers. They have been distilled three or more times, with each distillation removing progressively more and more toxins and impurities.
To keep from getting a hangover I suggest the following: Right before you go to bed after over indulging, drink as much water as you can without vomiting. This water will replace the water you have lost from drinking. I have tried this many times, and while it isn't a miracle cure it does help.

One of the main reasons you feel hungover after getting drunk is because alcohol is a diuretic - simply stated alcohol dehydrates you - its very important after a night of drinking to drink a lot of fluids (water, gatorade to replace the lost electrolytes) to replenish what you have lost. Also you can try taking a couple aspirin and a multi-vitamin when you get in from a night of drinking - this should also help with the morning after pain

Hangovers are symptomatic of the dehydration caused by the intake of alcohol. Drinking loads of water will help, but over drinking water will remove more of the mineral salts that your body needs to function properly. Drinking a remedy for dehydration may aid this but most don't taste good, Dialoryte is an example. Drinks like lucozade contain a lot of sugars but do not replace the salts.
There are loads of theories that taking pain killers before during or after drinking will help, but the chances are they are only masking any discomfort. The only way to not get a hangover is not to drink to excess.
As for why lager might make it worse - different drinks do contain different mixes and levels of chemicals, and there is always the possibility of a food intolerance.
Realbeer.com say - Brandy, red wine, rum, whisky, beer, white wine, gin and vodka are worst to least in descending order of likelihood to cause a hangover.
Eating will also help by making you feel fuller and slowing the absorbtion of alcohol into the body.

The reason you have a hangover is because your brain is dehydrated. The alcohol in your system limits your control and the result is that you pee more liquid than you drink so the brain gets dehydrated. Bring a pint of water to bed with you and drink it if you wake up during the night, or drink water before you go to bed if you can. Stops the hangovers. Some people get worse hangovers from different types of alcohol because they may have an allergy to the contents e.g. grape, wheat, yeast etc.

Its all about dehydration. When you drink you pee out more than the volume of the alcoholic drinks you have so you get dehydrated. In the morning you have a headache because the material which holds you brain in your skull is stretched due to the lack of water.
To avoid a hangover the best way is to drink LOADS of water right before you go to bed. This is quite hard when you're wasted and just want to pass out though..

A hangover (veisalgia) is the sum of unpleasant physical effects following heavy consumption of alcohol. The most common reported characteristics of a hangover are feelings of extreme thirst, lethargy, nausea, sensitivity to sunlight and noise, and headache. Hypoglycemia, dehydration, and vitamin B12 deficiency are all theorized causes of hangover symptoms. Hangover symptoms may be felt for a variable period of time after alcohol consumption, and may persist for a short period of time (12 to 36 hours[1]), or even longer (48 to 72 hours after the last alcoholic drink is consumed[2]).

The more dehydrated you are, the worse you'll feel. Plus your body is trying to get rid of the toxins because in effect, it is poison. But that's no reason to stop. The best cure? Get your glad rags on, go out and start all over again, soon you'll be so drunk, you'll forget your hangover, it will all become drunken blur

"hair of the dog that bit you"
it was believed that if an animal bit you, you'd either get sick or die so a believed remedy was to put the hair of that animal onto the cut that the animal gave you... they believed that you'd be cured..
Alcohol works the same way! thankfully!!! REMEDY:
have an ounce of the alcohol you were drinking the night before and you will feel alot better... not sure on how long it will last for but it works for alot of people..
your body is now lacking the drug (alcohol) which you drank too much of the night before... having a little bit of the drink you consumed the night before will help you slowly get off of your suffering... i know it sounds gross but it really works no matter what anyone says.
try it and let me know

It's called the krept cycle... Simply put, it's lack of H2O & electrolytes in the body, which makes it hard for your body to run this cycle. Some say that spirits that are distilled 5 or more times are so pure, that a hangover is virtuall impossible.

the word hungover means that ur dehydrated, the best thing is to drink a pint of water before you go out and then another pint when you come in, plus eat a good meal ie, chicken or steak before you go out to soak up most of the alcohol in ur system.
