Take him out and walk with him and train him to sit and down and stay. things like that.
It will teach the dog to look to you for guidence and training reinforces you as the alpha dog in the pack.
It will help you to bond with the dog and give him something to do. It is important to keep them busy and active. They like to have something to do.
I hunt mine and they love to go out in the pasture and hunt for things. Even in the off season I work them with scented dumbies and they love to work. They get very excited whe you get out the hunting collars.
Remember to have fun and include your dog you will get a freind for life.

The best way to get to know your dog is to spend time with him - you go for walks, play ball, throw a frisbee, just sit together outside. Then you take some time to train him - always keeping the sessions short and fun. Dogs love the interaction with their person when you're training. Another thing all of mine have really loved is the one-on-one time they get when I'm grooming them. I've never had a dog who didn't love being groomed.

All of these things combined make up your relationship with your dog - and that's how you get to know each other.

The very best way to get to know your dog is through training. Dogs have a pack mentality and are happiest when following the alpha dog in the pack. It makes them feel safe and secure. Your dog looks to you for this security. You feed him, therefore you are alpha. Find yourself a training technique that best fits your schedule and personality. Your dog will love you for it and the two of you will become fast and inseparable friends.

Any time spent with your dog will help you learn more about your dog. If you're talking about bonding, taking him out for a walk, feed him some treats out of your hand, train him to do some tricks (develops bond, trust, respect), play with him, etc.
