This sounds similar to the already existing feature in Windows XP called System Restore. But I have a better solution for you... why don't you try using disk imaging software? Norton has one called Ghost that I've used before and there are some others out there as well. What you would do is after a fresh install and after you've installed all your software applications, make an image of your hard drive. You can store it on a DVD or depending on the size, a CD and when your computer gets sluggish, restore the saved image. The only drawback to this is any new software you might install on your computer that wasn't part of the disk image will be lost. I would recommend having at least a second hard drive to store important data. Otherwise, that'd be lost as well in an image restore.

Good luck.

you can install "norton ghost" which is meant for the purpose that you are looking for. But the catch is, it will take the comp back to the same settings but it wont get rid of the virus.

The best thing to do is to get a good firewall installed on your comp. you may install zone alarm pro firewall or the free version. That will prevent infections. And ofcorse always use antivirus and anti spyware softwares.
