Because they interpret literally the words of St Paul in I Corinthians 11: 6:"If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head."

Ask them about it. But when I was a member of a Brethren group in the US we wore regular clothing but the women covered their heads in church while at worship. The Brethren are lovely sweet people and true Christians. They are a branch of Anabaptist. Amish and Mennonite are as well.

It is part of their religious doctrine...quite similar to the beliefs of US Amish, Menonites, and Mormans.
A lot of their predecesors left England where they were persecuted for their religious beliefs and practices and traveled to the US....they, the pilgrims, actually called the place they landed Plymouth Rock.
They gave rise to their own brand of persecution highlighted by the Salem Witchtrials of Salem Massachusetts...the same state which now bears so many proud Irish Catholics whose fathers left their their intolerant homelands in the UK and region to live in the USA.

I've never heard of the group, but if they are out of the AntiBaptist movement of the 1850s, they wear that because their religious beliefs never changed fashions :)
Really, it is probably out of "modesty" and somewhere in the bible it says for a woman's head to never go uncovered. Atleast that is why Amish wear 2 bonnets (one for going out and the other underneath it for inside).
