Quite obviously there is order in the universe (Planetary orbits, for example). From observing natural phenomena we can establish some laws( Electromagnetic theory, gravitation)In fact science applies only to that part of the universe which is amenable to laws we formulate.
Zarathustra was the first person to extend the concept of cosmic order to human beings. It is called Asa in the Avesta. The same concept appears equivalently in the Rigveda under the term Rta. ( Difficult to pronounce. R is as Ri in Rishi, t is soft not the t in tomato.a is long)The basic idea is this. Cosmic order is intrinsic to celestial bodies. But order in the form of ethics or moral code has to be prescribed for human beings so that their conduct can become predictable.

In the context of your question, we don't know the laws of the universe. We have traditions that are observed by different groups of people, often established by or following one person (Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, etc.). Human emotions and biases get in the way of following anyone else in a narrow way, so you get variations and "interpretations" that often get far away from the original precepts.

If you follow these "laws," you will be as "good" as they require you to be, not necessarily a "better person."

I don't think you understand your own question. Laws of the universe are not anything you can choose to obey...in fact you have little choice but to be controled by them.

What you reference is more likly the laws and tenents of religion which are an out growth of man thus not universal.

You will be judged by your faith and your works the Bible says. God's law is the law of the universe and you can see that by breaking God's law that is sin. The law cannot save you but you have to follow the law to be saved, or in other words, if you accept Jesus then you will automatically love and follow his laws. The Ten Commandments.

The main law of the universe is "energy follows thought". That's the basis behind karma and creative visualization.

Don't take off your helmut while on a spacewalk. Don't fly straight at a star or blackhole. Be kind to aliens, or you will get an anal probe. Don't hurt your sex partner, or your new sex partner will be named Bubba, and surely hurt you. Don't eat too many apples at one time or you will be very sorry as you run out of hiney wipes.
