Yes, panelling can be painted. Any surface can be painted if the right preparation work is done first and then the right paint products for the job are used.
You'll want to lightly sand the panelling, damp-dust it off, prime, then apply two coats of finish paint. The better the primer, the better the finished paint job will look, so make sure the primer you purchase is good for use on wood and/or for concealing stains (wood grain can show up as a stain through cheap primer). Paints that are 100% acrylic have wonderful coverage and adhesion. Good luck!

a couple years ago i bought a "70's" house. Paneling all over. Money alittle tight. Well all i did was get some good primer paint and put about 2-3 coats on. Dry 1-2 days between layers. Then picked out some suitable color and put1-2 coats on that. It makes such a difference. Money got better some paneling came down. Some paneling did not it just looked that good. Just make sure paneling is clean before putting primer on.

Yes.......use a good quality primer first. If the wood panelling is very dark you might want to put two coats of primer on and then paint....If its in the basement stick with a lighter colour....and do an accent wall in a darker colour depending on how you are planning on decorating and with what style. Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start primer is excellent a little pricey but works so well.

You are better off taking the panelling down. In most cases panelling is too smooth to paint. You could try sanding the panelling if taking it down is not an option.

Yes, i've done it several times without any problems..........You should put two thin coats of primer on first, with a sponge roller, let dry throughly in between coats, then use regular paint as your final step

yes, but you may need a primer if you will be painting it white. I have done this for the first time last year and it looks great.
