Being able to say, "We're right you're wrong" gives a sense of moral superiority that is very important to some people. They use religion to make themselves feel better. Most of these people are very rigid, set in their own ways, because without that foundation they don't know who they are.
As for being intolerant....yes, Jesus said love thy neighbor. He also said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the father but through me.
Muslims and Jews are particularly reviled by Christians because they are so close to the truth but corrupt it. I think it is harder for Christians that they have the same source material, the same history yet still reject Christianity. These three are too much alike and too different to co-exist peacefully.
Which is why we should just get rid of religion and stop coming up with new ways to make ourselves different from other people. We have enough natural differences; we don't need artificial ones as well.

Look at the Pharisees. They was a religious sect and look what Jesus called them. Not every religion believes in Jesus. Well without Jesus they aint even saved. Some religions believe that God is all about love so everyone goes to heaven. Thats scriptualy wrong. God is a God of wrath and he chatises those he loves. Some religions dont believe God or Jesus, and there for again they are not saved. There is more to it than just loving your neighbor.

It is because "leaders" like Oral Roberts and others have a need to be right not rightous. The Christian religion is a simple thing really. Seeking after salvation takes on many faces. Mostly for power and money. But still one must hold to some standards or what is the point of believing in anything? The Catholic church has stated numerous times that they do not hate homosexuals but do not agree with their actions and that is a rightous stand to take. But other "so-called" Christians narrowly view Bible verses and take that to the extreme.

Jesus did not preach tolerance of false beliefs. On the contrary, He taught that the truth alone is what could set people free. Obviously the conflicting beliefs of manmade denominations cannot all be true. But each denomination starts from the assumption that its own beliefs are absolutely true, even though they have no more authority to interpret scripture than the other denominations do. Once you claim that your beliefs are true, you have claimed that beliefs which conflict with yours are false, whether you state it in so many words or not. There is simply no way around that. Which is why each denomination is intolerant of the "false" beliefs of the others. And which is why denominationalism itself is plainly contrary to the stated will of God, who said that His followere were to be ONE, even as He and His heavenly Father are ONE.

Why are people of other religions intolerant of Christians? For the same reason. Intolerance isn't anything to do with the religion, it's to do with the lack of self-love in the people who are intolerant. People who like themselves don't need to hurt others.

Intolerant is a word that gets thrown around alot. The problem with today is that we want people to believe that there are no wrongs and rights just differences. The problem with that is that there is wrong and right and there is absoloute truth. Why should I be forced to be "tolerant " of a lie or something that is wrong? and if it is wrong I have an obligation to say that...thats not being intolerant thats being truthful.

Tolerance and intolerance seem to be the buzz words of this generation, but the definition seems to have been presented a little askew as of late.
tol·er·ance (t¼l“…r-…ns) n. 1. The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
Tolerance is not acceptance, nor adoption of others beliefs and/or practices, but the respect for.
Lately it seems our society wants to compels those of varying beliefs to 'accept' one anothers beliefs, not just tolerate them. This has especially been true of Christians. There seems to be a new move in our society to be 'intolerant' of Christians because of our belief that Jesus is the only way.
As a Christian we come to understand the Bible as the word of God. Jesus has said in the word, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me."
So in toleranting a different belief, I will certainly love that person and his/her right to their belief, and I respect their right to practice that belief, but I will not 'accept' their belief, nor bow down to their gods. I cannot if I truly believe my own belief; Christianity, anymore than I can expect them to accept Christ if they truly believe that it is wrong.
I am also willing to share my faith and to listen to others share theirs, and to comment on the similiarities and differences, however, this is usually very difficult because Christians are not the only ones that are 'intolerant'.
Also, those in the media, who have voices that are heard more often than those of us who go about our everyday lives in obscurity, do not necessarily represent us, but rather represent themselves, so when they say something stupid or intolerant, the media seems to turn around and label "all Christians" as stupid or intolerant. Hardly a fair comparison.

Because these people have twisted the words of the Book they read. They have let human issues and bias enter their preaching and lives. They are all twisted. Jesus taught love. I pay attention to jesus teachings because they bare the most Christ like behavior and decisions. His story is full of good advice and choices not to mention a blue print on how "christians" should approach most situaions. Jesus attitude was not that of condemning others, he was fully confident that his God was the only God and he taught this. Why because he strongly believed it. He left others who did not want to believe alone. He didnt curse them or anything, he felt his God will deal with them. Why cant Christians get this right is beyond me.

Jesus told us to love one another, and not their sinful ways. We are not to tollerate sin anymore than His Father the Almighty God does. God will not look upon the sin or the sinner for they are unclean.
God gave us the bible as an instruction booklet to help us live good rightous lives according to His word. HE also told us to not have other gods before Him. Other religions that do not teach the word of God or obey them is not to be tollerated or accepeted by those who obey and follow the Almighty God and accept His son Jesus as their savior. Those who do tollerate those things are not Christians, but reprobates according to God Himself
Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Christians are to be the light that lead people out of there darkness of the life of sin they live and not let them get their spiritual eyes adjusted to that darkness. Tolerance of unrightousness is accpetance of it and that is not what God wants from Christian. He wants obedience to all of His laws.
Deuteronomy 11:27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:
Deuteronomy 11:28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.
These are not my words, but God's words.

Your question would require a book to answer.
Buddha taught nearly the same things as Christ but lived a 1000+ years before Christ. Tolerance being one of the teachings.
Humans tend to twist things to suit their needs and that also applies to beliefs-listen to a good lawyer sometime.
All you can do is follow the teachings of whatever belief you embrace and by example others my follow.
