I agree, to make money and to control the people. In the medieval times, people were held back and only the priests could read, so that they could interpret the bible in what ever way they liked.
A lot of so called religious people are total hypocrites. They preach love and then they go and prosecute people who think differently.
And sorry to say, but the Catholics are the worst. They have committed atrocious crimes throughout the centuries (Witch hunts, burning people at the stake, Inquisition ... etc.) They are as bad as Muslims, who are fighting their Jihads.
I do not follow any conventional/organized religion. I believe in positive karma and fate.

Religion has certainly allowed some people financial gain but I believe it was created to control groups of people and make them adhere to certain beliefs/rules.
However, every time I see a huge ornamental church I wonder why they don't spend that money helping people. I believe that is what "God" would want.

Churches are private clubs. Religion can be used to control people. Religion can be used to gain material wealth and power. That is what I believe. True spirituality is not associated with many many churches.

Religion is one of the three ways one can gain power and control in a Culture and Society. in earlier times Religious leaders had a much different role than in modern cultures and societies. these early Religious leaders made decisions such as when to hunt, when to plant crops, when to marry, when to move, which cultures and societies to trade with, what earthly phenomena was all about, interpret the signs of celestial happenings, when to appease their Gods, heal the sick etc. etc. etc. when those in charge did their duties favorable and the culture and society prospered they remained in power when they failed others took over the duties.

Since religions are man made, they are made for a variety of reasons, one of them being to earn money.
However a Relationship with the awesome uncreated Creator of the universe is Creator-made and its purpose is to show the Way (through Jesus Christ alone) to a right relationship with Him.

They weren't created for that purpose but throughout history religion-particularly Christianity- has been perverted for political and monetary gain. Buddhism is probably one of the few that has actively sought to distance itself from political affairs.

Religious organisations are taxed diffferently. Some people will stop at nothing even if they have to invoke the name of the "Lord, thy God in vain!"

DUHHHHH !!!!!!! If they REALLY are so worried about other people, they should all voluntarily submit themselves to the same tax payer structure as everybody else. Can you even IMAGINE how many billions that would amount to ???
