Look up your local animal shelter in the phone book. I'm sure they will be happy to tell you whatever you want to know. And if you specifically want to go to your local pound, check the government listings in the phone book (blue pages in many communities) or call your local town hall/office. They should be able to help you find the pound, etc.

Many animal shelters and city/county dog pounds have web sites that you can browse and view the various animals up for adoption. Find out what your city's web site is and start there.
The only other option is to go in person. The people that work there are generally very nice and helpful, though if you go at the end of the day close to quitting time, they're understandably anxious to get you out. LOL
Bless you for wanting to adopt/rescue an animal from the shelter.

if you are trying to adopt a dog then just go to your local shelter...if you are wanting to rescue dogs that will be put to sleep contact a local rescue organization and help foster for a while if you see this is something you are able to do then talk with a local shelter about letting you take a couple of their hard to place dogs and try to find QUALIFIED homes for them....it is a very wonderful feeling to place a dog into a new home knowing youve helped save a life but it can also be a time consuming, heartbreaking, job because you feel like no matter how many you place it never ends...just remember no dog should be placed without being spayed or neutered!!!!!!! make sure before you jump into this you work with your local rescues and shelters to learn the proper way to screen a potential owner, how to do a home check, where to send new owners and their dogs for training classes ect.I hope that this helps and if you can rescue...bless your heart !!!!!

The actual animal shelter is the place to start. Once animals have been held for a time they are available for adoption unless the animal is dangerous or sick.
You may have a local private animal adoption organization which takes on the job of finding homes for dogs that may be destroyed if not adopted. You can find them in the yellow pages and these range from small individual project to major international organization such as greyhound rescue.

Go to www.petfinder.org. It is a site that posts dogs who are at shelters & foster homes. It also has a section called "Library" that offers LOTS of great articles about how to select your pound puppy, behavior issues, training, etc.

I like to use petfinder.com because if you prefer one type of animal or male/female you can search with that in mind. You also can choose how far you want to go to find the animal you want. Good Luck!
