I'm trying to install printer software, but it is stopped by "print spooler". Options availlable are: "fix" or "fix all". Neither gives me a result.

A Memory Cache Either Set Up Virtually On Your Hard Drive or actually on your motherboard(In The internal Modem Usually), To Send Emails In The Format That Your Internet Runs On (Dial Up, Dsl, Cable) Basically It Delivers It To Your modem or Server in the format that it gets transmitted as.

A PRINT Spooler is the same but for any given printer installed. (It's Possible That The Spooler Location Has Been Changed Or Deleted.)

Have You Actually Printed Anything since you started having problems installing software?.
Try This Then If You Can't Print, Then Reinstall The Printer Via Printer Setup Wizard In Control Panel Or Completely Remove All Printers from your available printers list and then try the software.

(From The Option "Fix" etc, it looks like the things I'm Getting At Are What's Going On.)

A print spooler is a little program that takes the information from the programs trying to ptint something and stores that information in a spool (a portion of computer memory used to store informations that will be transmitted to the printer).
After the program in which you print something generates the information for the printer, it transmits it to the spooler so the program can continue to run. The spooler works with the printer and transmits data to it at a rate it can accept.
If you are trying to install a new printer, use the "Add printer" wizard in the "Printers" folder, not the setup program on the installation disk.

Hi, the print spooler is a service in the windows operating system. The error that it is giving you might depend on a lot of things
1. go to control panel, administrative tools, services (if you have xp) then check if the print spooler service is started if not right click on it and start it. then try to install the software again. If that doesn't work

2. insert the windows xp installation cd in the cd drive go to the run command just above the start button and type sfc /scannow a scan will begin (it will slow your computer a bit so you shouldn't use your computer while it's scanning) this utility repairs all the system files in windows that have been corrupted or are not working properly.

Hope it helps :)

The print spooler is a program that co-ordinates sending files to the printer. If you don't have a printer currently attached, maybe it is trying to 'spool' a print job to a non-existent printer? Have you got a little picture of a printer in the bottom right corner? If you have, click on it and see if you have any print jobs waiting to be sent. You may need to cancel them (from the 'document' menu bar option in the window that opens when you click on the printer icon). If you haven't, sorry I don't know.

Spooling is the process that loads all pages into one document to be printed at once. Unless your computer is not compatible it would become an option in preferences. Check your doc's for system requirements.
