Turning the other cheek is not beneficial. It promotes sadism. There are plenty of people who will gladly hit your other cheek, and then kick the stuffing out of you, which doesn't end the violence at all. That's why the nonviolent protest methods developed by Ghandi in India (who didn't follow Jesus) are far better than anything based on Christianity.
Most of what Jesus said reflects a primitive sense of ethics and morality. It is, for example, unethical to claim to die for someone else's wrongdoing, then demand to be worshipped for this 'sacrifice' when everyone is going to die anyway.
These are folk tales, except the Jesus stories don't make as much sense as Aesop.

White Tiger had a good start, but stopped 1/3 of the way through the sermon. Read Matthew chapters 5-7 for the whole thing. As there are over 100 different principles listed, it is a little long for a single Yahoo Answer listing to try to explain them all.

See the "Ten Commandments". If you look at them clearly you will see that they are mutually beneficial. For instance "Thou shalt not steal" (I might be wrong about the wording, but I think that's the meaning!) If you do steal, that deprives the owner of the property and it also hurts you, in a less obvious way.You respect yourself less, feel guilty, furtive, etc. It's altogether a bad thing for both parties.
Envying is bad, because you should know that you have as much talent as the person you envy, though maybe in a different field and you need to go out and do something to get your own ..... (whatever you envy!) It is also hurtful to the person you envy because it pushes them into feeling bad (If they know about it!)
That's just to mention two. If you look at them all you can find the reasons for them being necessary for a mutually harmonious society.

The parable of the good Samaritan conveys a sound moral teaching. The learned man and the religious zealot refused to help their co-religionist while a Samaritan-a social outcast- stopped to help. God doesn't need people whose heads are filled with knowledge and religious crap he needs people who treat their fellow man with unconditional respect and tolerance.

Obviously, Jesus never served in the military, law enforcement, or any other position of authority.
"Turning the other cheek" will usually only result in having both cheeks slapped before being killed.

Forgiveness - Peter asked him how mant times should I forgive someone and he said "seventy times seven" - really meaning there is no limit to the times we should forgive - as he does.
Kindness - offering a cool cup of water to those who need it.
And his modeling is the most powerful - sacrifice for others, prayer, wisdom in speech, compassion, justice....
He showed the character of God - if we see him we have seen how the Father is, and there is plenty to teach and inspire us - and be grateful of how God is.

We should follow God's law, he said if you love me keep my commandments. He came to magnify the law - the ten commandments - in that he said that if you even think about killing someone or sleeping with another man's wife you commit sin. Also, the Sabbath he came to explain that the sabbath is still valid and that we can do good on the sabbath day saturday but to still keep it holy. It is a reminder of Creation and also for us to rest and worship our creator God. He came to heal as we should be willing to be healed ourselves by him. the list goes on and on...
