It depends on what you mean by original purpose. God has never lost His purpose, which is to be with man. You need to understand the God is perfect and cannot be in the presence of sin. That is why he sent His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the lamb of God. He died on the cross for all sins, both past and present. You should read Revaluation, the last book of the bible. You will see a lot of what you read actually coming true right now!. Remember, Revaluation talks about Armageddon starting at the Tigris and Euphrates - which is the site of modern day Baghdad. No, God's purpose has not changed - man has.

Only in perception.
If God and Jesus are not real or are characters who can be interpreted to fit the needs of the current day, then yes, their "original purpose" has been lost.
However, if They are independent of humans, if humans, in fact, are dependent upon them (which they are), then no, Their original purpose is still the same.
Because humans are sinful and "have fallen short of the glory of God," there is no way we can possible comprehend the nature of God and Jesus unless we have a means of being connected with them (which we do).
So our perception, through sin, changes our view of God and Jesus. But because it is merely perception, God and Jesus have never changed - only our perception has.

The reason they were invented was to give individuals control over large groups of people. They are still being used for that purpose, so the answer would be no.
God & Jesus (Mohammed, Moses, et al) are still being used to control the masses.

Since their original purpose was to allow people who don't contribute much else to society (i.e.; the clergy) to live off the generosity of their fellow man, and play off their deepest fears for their own benefit, then I'd say "no" -- they're still doing exactly what their inventors intended them to do.

No. The purpose was to seperate and control the masses creating religio-wars, with the illusion of spirituality and moral messages. The plan has worked perfectly.
