Jail time, wage garnishment, and loosing his tax refund at the end of the year. They will take his tax refund and give it to you if he doesn't pay.

It all depends on what state you live in, as each state has different consequences. The court process can be a long one. First you need an order of support. If you don't have one that's your first step and I do suggest having a lawyer.
Once you have an order and the father is still not paying, then it is usually another trip back to court. In my case, the father's wages were garnished, meaning the court orders his employer to hold back some of his paycheck; it is then sent through the state to me. If garnishment does not work, worse consequences are in store for him. They can include suspension of any state license (including driver's license, hunting/fishing license, trade license, medical license, etc), seizure of tax returns, freezing of his assets and jail time.
In my state, back pay is assigned interest, so that he has to pay whatever he owes from previously, his current as well as interest on the back amount. His amount of support has been raised because of the amount of back child support he owes and this is all garnished.

He could go to jail the money he pays to get out will go to you. Wage garnishment and also tax intercept whenever he files. Also if the child support was established through the courts and he doesn't pay can be found in contempt and once you go there have him found in contempt and give the proper paperwork you have an option to check either jail time tax intercept or higher payments until he pays the remaining arreage. If it is done through child support enforcement they would suspend his drivers licenses and garnish his wages and there would be a warrant issued for his arrest.

there will be a warrant out for his arrest, they will hold his income tax check until they get the money out that is owed to you, they will take child support out of his work checks, and they could make him pay more child support each month so he can get caught up on all of the back child support. If he doesn't pay and he was court ordered you can take him back to court. trust me I went through this crap before.

Everyone has given good answers, but let me clarify one thing. If there is court-ordered child support and he isn't paying, and the back support is LESS THAN $500, his income tax return WILL NOT be withheld. I thought this would happen for me, but since the back support he owed was less than $500, I didn't get anything from his tax return.

if you have a court order for child support and he still does not pay, he could possibly have his wages garnished or possible jail time . . I think it depends on the state where you live, or it might be the same across the board . ..

well first the state will request him to come to court to explain. If he is not working, they give him up to 60 days to find a job. if he does not get a job, a warrant is issued for his arrest!

It should come straight out of his paychecks and to you. If he claims he isn't working, he will eventually have to pay back pay. Check your state laws on this. Every state varies.
